Howdy gents,
Decided to go waste some time at the guitar shop nearbye. Upon entering, I was immediately drawn to a John Cruz strat that looked like it got in a fight with a wood chipper. There was more bare wood showing then there was laquer. I was intrigued by $2700 price tag on the thing, so I grabbed it and took it into the amp room to plug her in.
I sat down and inspected all the detail in the relic, which was very extensive. And after playing it for a bit, I have a new outlook on relic'd guitars. I am usually one of the first to chime in with a negative comment on the subject of roadworn gear, and now I will advocate.
I left the store a bit confused and overwhelmed. Long story short, the best guitar I have EVER played, is the last guitar I would have been interested in based on cork sniffing opinions I formed long ago. Now I think about that guitar before falling asleep. I have to get me one of these! Kudos to the builders at Fender's Custom shop.

I've only had one bad experience with a relic Strat.

It was a Fiesta Red 50s style Strat. Looked and sounded amazing. One little problem. The Frets were very sharp on the edges. I'm guessing that the maybe the neck shrank from some sort of temperature change or the moisture content changed in the wood. I'm not sure, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Having said that, I would love to get a lightly reliced sonic blue w/ dark rosewood '62 Strat.

I was perfectly happy with just a strat until I stumbled across a Custom Shop Heavy relic Tele and played it. It won me over immediately and sounded better than every other American Tele I tried. I always thought the "Relic" pre-worn look was nonsense, but now I love it because I know the sounds it makes are all that matters ..... it's tone and clarity are amazing. It is an '07 "Vintage" Humbucker version, unique in appearance AND sound and I love it (I'll eventually get over the HIGH price, but that's why I charge for my gigs!). Of course, I love my strat too, so you NEED both, but each guitar's sound is unique.
I doubt I will ever buy another Fender unless it is from their "Custom Shop".....there is a difference and if you don't think so play some and you will find out.
