Glad the "when you're ready" slogan got dropped. I actually find that slogan a tad condescending. I actually would be put off buying a guitar that included that slogan on it.
( quote by TC5A )

Why condescending... :?: Would you say the same about a Ferrari or a Porsche at a dealership if the slogan was similar.. :?:
But more than likely the salesman say's to you " When you are ready.. We'll be glad to assist you..."

Condescending would be if the slogan was.. " Only for the chosen few ". I don't see where Fender Custom Shop needs to apologize for what represents the very best that the Fender has to offer. Are Custom Shop guitars affordable to everyone.. :?: No.. they are not, but in IMHO the idea that a company has to be politically correct lest they offend someone is ludicrous.
I'd love to have a McLaren MP4-12 in my garage, but that is outside of my own resources. Yet I do not consider anyone who has one or the company itself as condescending.
I appreciate it for what it is, an exclusive amazing piece of machinery.
By that standpoint I look on Fender's Custom Shop Guitars as exclusive amazing instruments.
By that definition they are not for everyone, but everyone can aspire to purchase a CS edition and no one is excluded unless their own personal resource's prevents them from doing so( That's life ).
I consider myself fortunate that I found a discontinued CS edition in pristine condition, I only have one but some members on this forum have many, have been very gracious in allowing us, Forum Members to view their collection. By no means do I consider their collections and the visual adertisement of their collection on this forum as condescending. I say Thank You for sharing and I myself look forward to purchasing another CS... " When I am Ready.."

Take it one step further. Sunday afternoon I sat with a Squier Vintage Vibe Stratocaster in my hands and was totally amazed by the way this particular guitar felt and sounded played through a Frontman 212....both....."crafted in China". So, with a little creative bargaining and a discount coupon I could have some serious working gear for under $600US. I remember 1958 when there were only two Stratocasters [trem and hardtail], a gold hardware option, and a limited number of colors. The cost in those dollars was similar to today's American Standard according to findings in a previous thread in these Forums. So are we to eschew the higher end due to the aforementioned or recognize that the entry level product, and a satisfied customer, gives expectation to the company that the customer will return, again, and again, going up the ladder, until 'they are ready' likely to build their own personal instrument. And how fortunate to have the choice of multiple price points, in quality gear these days  .

To me "when you're ready" is addressed at middle aged buyers who are at a point in their life where they have adequate disposable income to indulge in the purchase of the top of the line instrument they probably dreamed about since they were teenagers. It's a "luxury goods" corporate type of campaign and like another poster pointed out it's not Rock n' Roll at all.

That being said I'm about ready to get my next custom shop instrument soon...

I'm equally amazed at the quality of Fender's lower price points.
Remembering back in early 1970's, quality was all over the spectrum and for today's equivalent under $500.00 you could not find a decently playable instrument ( Fender, Gibson ) that you could take to the gig that very night, plug in and have no worries about it performing.
They were not available unless you bought Japanese imported and those were in the transitional stage of becoming the example rather than at the time the imitation. But many were just that. imitations and not up to the demands. I think Electra is a name that come's to mind, as well of course early Ibanez and a host of other makes ( most built at the same manufacturing plant  ).

Hello,
The names David, i'm new here on the site and I was searching around the web about the "when you're ready" decal on the headstock and was wondering if that was exclusive as well?

so far i have the cert with that phrase on it
(sorry for the large pics, i can't seem to resize them!)

Image

And here's my neck with the logo mentioned earlier.

Image

Mike,
Is there anything special about this particular neck? (This is off a NOS David Gilmour Black Strat).
Thanks for having me on the forum! Glad to learn new things here!

David S.

Hi David: Welcome :!:

This was a short-lived 'experiment' ultimately decided against. Whether or not this will rise to collectability like those upside down airmail stamps, who knows. Regardless...it's a great guitar, isn't it.

Hey David also " Welcome "
Just one question, why is the guitar all taken apart, tuners and all..

I'm a bit miffed as to why so many people feel the need to take a Strat or Tele apart to make sure that all the components are for real....
To what purpose is that... :?:
If you purchased it from a reliable source and everything is there that should be with a Custom Shop Guitar, why dismantle it... :?:
To swap parts or pups to something else... :?: If that's the case than that particular CS Strat is no longer what it was and it's value is questionable.....
A 69 or a 56 is what it is...If that is not acceptable then people should not buy those particular Vintage reproductions.
I say leave well enough alone......Leave Custom Shop guitars as they were built and if customising/modding is the point then get an inexpensive MIM or MIA..

To be clear, "When You're Ready" remains part of the FCS logo, we just don't use it on the instruments.

53magnatone, i was fortunate to obtain a set of NOS '60s Kluson tuners (not the reissue ones, THE REAL DEAL!) and an original 1976 DiMarzio FS-1 pickup replaced with the SSL-1C that is currently installed.I was in the process of switching them out with the Gotohs, hence the lack of and same follows for the pickguard. It's true that it's sacrilegious to take a Custom Shop Strat apart, in this case it was swapping out a repro for original. I imagine that it should INCREASE it's value considering the value and rarity of the tuners.

Look back on your specs. David chose an SSL-5 for the bridge as opposed to the vintage SSL-1. We had been given to understand that he liked it so much he was going to swap out the bridge pickup on his stage guitar for one. As for your assumptions about the tuners, I would say that you've actually changed the intent of the project and altered the guitar to the negative side. I, for one, would restore the guitar to its original condition to maintain its value as such. I don't see the advantage of original tuners to the whole in this case.
