Hoping somebuddy way smarter than me can help out w/ the differences b/w these 2 CS models (besides $1k).

Info: Purchase is a family surprise gift for my father so I can't ask him. I know these '60 style models are the ones he loves, and he plays Blue's style, A LOT of John Mayer, and some Hendrix, and some Clapton.

I'm a beginner but I cant really find a difference b/w the 2 except:

Custom Shop 1968 // vs. // Time Machine Series '69
Ash // vs. // Alder
9.5 Fingerboard Radius // vs. // 7.25 Fingerboard Radius
21 6105 frets // vs. // "21 Vintage Style Frets" ?? (difference?)
SAME single coil style Pickups it appears

Any help would be appreciated!

Also FWIW he absolutely loves my JM Strat which is a 9.5 Fingerboard so I don't know if the 7.25 will matter or not.

Thanks guys/gals! :)

To answer your questions in a simple way: It's a matter of personal taste.
Custom Shop 1968 // vs. // Time Machine Series '69

Ash // vs. // Alder: Ash has a brighter tone and has beautiful grain. This makes for great looking Sunbursts. Alder is heavier and has a warmer tone. To me it has less grain so not as pretty a ash.

9.5 Fingerboard Radius // vs. // 7.25 Fingerboard Radius: 7.25 is more traditional for a Fender neck, but "frets out" faster when you bend notes. 9.5 is more modern and easier to bend notes. I own necks with both and I'd rather have the 9.5.

21 6105 frets // vs. // "21 Vintage Style Frets" ?? (difference?): 6105 Frets make it easier to bend and play the guitar. You'll get better sustain, too.

SAME single coil style Pickups it appears

I hope this information helps.

The CS '69 Strat was also available as a Team Built one-off version with a Duncan Trembucker in the bridge and an original Floyd Rose Tremolo.

It's my understanding that Ash is heavier than Alder...am I wrong?

Ash is not only heavier than alder but has also more snap, making it ideal for a maple-neck Strat with three single-coils.

Alder is more punchy and suits perfectly Fat Strats with warm-sounding rosewood necks and H/S/S pickups.

Body weights: I believe, but don't quote me on it, that Swamp Ash is lighter than hard Ash. I know a lot of early Strats were made from Swamp ash. I want to say right around '56 or '57 Fender started using Alder. Notice that a lot of very early Strats have more of an amber to dark brown sunburst look. When Fender changed the body wood to alder you will notice that 2-color-sunbursts are a "yellow" to brown sunburst. I believe this was done because the wood was coated in a sealer or something like that.

I own Alder Strats and one Swamp Ash Strat. The Ash is lighter to me.

I hope this helps.
