Thanks.... ....I know they have that "V" on the back of the headstock but does it say on the neck plate master built? or somewhere else? in other words does any language on the guitars differenciate what they are so I know for sure what i'm getting.

You also get to have personal conversations with the Master Builder. That way you and him are on the same page of exactly what you're after. That is unless you purchase one that's already built.

Your COA will list him as the builder.

Well, the "V" (or chevron) on the back of the headstock will have the builders signature...although some builders don't use the chevron....instead they use a slightly different decal (SEE PICS BELOW). There will also be a signature and sometimes date (usually signed in pencil) on the heel of the neck.

On the body, in the neck pup route there is usually the builders initials (ex. TK = Todd Krause)....Although, this is NOT always the case... I do have an early 90's J.W. Black Masterbuilt that does NOT have these initials...On that guitar (and many from that era) he signed, dated and stamped the neck pocket and the heel of the neck.

Hi zSPECTREz,

Nice to learn you have got guitars made by J.W. Black in your collection too!

Since Mr. Black is a past builder for Clapton, I was wondering how the Black instruments compare to Todd Krause guitars?

Hi Robert -

They are VERY VERY similar....which shocked me to be quite honest. I would have a very tough time telling them apart in a blindfold test.

The interesting bit about that is...the J.W. Black neck is supposedly a 10/56...it's even identified as that on the neck heel where he signed it...Thing is, it's nothing like any other 10/56 shape I've owned or played. It's A LOT sleeker, racier (like TK's EC neck). TK's most recent EC necks that he's done for me...have maybe just a hair more V...but I have one that he (TK) did from '04 or '05 that would be a dead ringer for this one.

I guess I just figured that all of the early 10/56 necks were pretty chunky...I had an interesting conversation a few yaers ago, with Greg Fessler, about when they first started making the 10/56 neck....even he made mention of how chunky they were in the early days! I've felt a bunch like that too...but this is quite the opposite indeed. Almost elegant...like a rapier would compare to a broadsword.

The guitar itself (a '56 Strat) is one of the finest guitars I've EVER played...that includes pre-CBS 50's strats...it's 7lbs even and has a voice like an angel! It's my favorite NON-EC guitar...well maybe tied with a John English '56 that I have...that's another phenomenal guitar!! But the two are very different even though they are both ('56's). The English neck is the chunky 10/56 shape that one would expect...I'm not sure what kind of pick ups were used in the J.Black...but it's got a little bit more growl than the English.

Thanks so much for the elaborate reply zSPECTREz!

Surprising that the Black and the Krause guitars are so close to each other. Your Black guitar sound like a real winner; I like the 1956 CS guitars, however the neck profile is a bit too chunky for me.

I wish I had the sense (or guts...) to acquire one back in the nineties... alas, it's too late now to get a J.W. Black.... :(

It's NEVER too late...don't lose hope

My J. Black strat is a pretty recent acquisition actually that I literally stumbled upon as a turn of good fortune...So, they are out there...just be patient & VIGILANT...you never know when the opportunity will spring out of nowhere.

Shoot if you're really wanting one bad....check in with me in a few months...I may just sell you mine. I'm always falling in love with "the next one"... I have a VERY short attention span :D

I recently purchased a Master Built Charvel Legacy, all I know is that it is one incredible guitar and I could not be happier.

I ran this by Mike recently and he confirmed that the '10/56' is the neck carve for the generic V-neck which Fender uses across the line: e.g.
Deluxes, Guy, Vaughn etc.

I sometimes get confused with the "letter" terminology in regards to neck shape. So the 10/56 is a V-shaped neck? I always thought that V-necks were more on the thin side like the early Fullerton reissue Strats. Supposedly the neck on my Custom Shop '52 Telecaster is a 10/56 Soft V-Shape "Boat Neck" but it looks more like a chunky D-neck to me. :?
