[quote="Robert R."]And yet another happy customer! Fender really seems to have hit the nail on this series.
.........and to think, that circuit has been around over twenty years, and people are just finding out about it. They're certainly doing a 'firesale' business on this baby.

Yep, the Clapton mid-boost circuit is surely a very useful mod; it really helps to add a little extra oomph when you need more beef in your tone during a solo. Works very well with full-sized humbuckers and stacked-coil hum-cancelling pickups.

I fully agree, yet I keep coming back to the classic single coils from time to time. I would love to hear EC again on normal single coils with a sweet distortion, like the Derek & the Dominos live sound.

Eric's the one who was looking for more 'compression' as he put it, according to A.R.Duchossoir's narrative on the evolution of that guitar. He wanted the best of the Strat and the LP. Apparently 'sweet' was not the sense of his taste on his palate any longer. Much to the benefit of those of us who own those guitars.

Eric seems to be moving on soundwise every now and then. However, concering his musical endeavours he has been moving back a lot; in the early 2000's there was a lot of Derek in his stage repertoire, followed by the Cream and Winwood reunions. Personally I wouldn't mind if he moved back soundwise as well from time to time. I believe there are quite a few people around who appreciated his old tone more than the newer sound.

I know that to be true, but there's been a trainload of writing in these pages about how to capture the rather unique quality of his current tone, just a trainload and, aside from the intangibles of the man's hands, the matter of how his signal chain is precisely eq'd still seems to be a state secret. Where the old guitar is concerned, the narrative in the Christies
Auction Catalog contains some interesting tidbits. One obvious characteristic of note that the mass block of the trem in that guitar was NOT stopped, as in the Signature Series. I also refer you to Will Kelly's article on setting up Strats in the August issue of Vintage Guitar as well as many such in past issues of Premier Guitar. All of these nuances contribute to tone, the pursuit of which can literally be a head-banging against the wall effort sans the'secret sauces' known only to the artists and their techs Remember too, that "Layla" was recorded through a vintage Champ amplifier. So much for MusicMan, Soldano and Fender '57 Twins.

Just to add on to this discussion, I got mine from Elderly Instruments, its a griggio. It came with the black limited edition case; this was back in February-March of this year and I recently gigged with it and used it in the studio. I love it, I just love it, the sound, the feel, the finish, the pickups, overall its an amazing guitar. I'm no stranger to the Clapton Strats, I've had the regular signature which I sold, a masterbuilt and the tribute Blackie, and now Todd is finishing up a brand new black one with flamed neck like the one Eric he used in the Cream reunion concert and the Classic Albums Disraeli Gears, you can also see him playing that guitar in the Back Home DVD, I love the tint of the neck and flaming which is what Todd is trying to replicate for me.
Cheers to you all and hope this helps.

Thanks Lefty. Well I've certainly have been in constant communication with Todd agreeing upon the details for the past three months so, I'm thinking it will be a killer looking and sounding guitar. Though this is the difficult part, the waiting.

Hi Stipe, you've probably noticed already, but if you need more info on the 2005 Cream Strat you may want to check out this little thread:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=36717

Btw, the Blackie Tribute... what is your viewpoint on this axe; do you keep it mainly for collecting purposes or do you use it as an actual player? If you are playing it, aren't you worried it will take some damage or just playwear that will diminish the value of it?

Robert

That was an interesting exchange. I've just added something to it.

Thank you Lefty, I went through the hole link that you pointed out. I spoke to Todd yesterday about it and he told me he's finishing the paint on the body and the tint on the flamed neck and he'll have more about it, possibly pics the next Monday. It's really exciting because I think its one of the coolest looking strats Clapton has ever played. Todd told me the neck was built by J. Black and after he retire he took over the making of the Clapton strats, so he knows all the inside scoop and assured me the result would be pretty spot on.

Now regarding the Blackie tribute, I have it on storage and its case, I do play it about 3 or 4 times a year but only very little and only at home and that's just to ensure the neck, the action and string tension are doing ok. I wouldn't feel very comfortable on taking that guitar to a gig, precisely for the reasons you mention, wear, tear, breakage, loss, etc. I do have it for collection purposes but also because its one of the greatest sounding strats I ever played. I do love it and when I bought I had to part ways with a lot of instruments in my collection, starting with a Jimmy Page Double Neck VOS which to this day still hurts.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

M.
