"LONG HAIR" JOURNEYMAN-ERA CLAPTON

"SHORT HAIR" YARDBIRDS-ERA CLAPTON

I wonder for which reason EC changes his personal appeal so quickly? Several times I've had a trouble to recognize him because of this.

I hope Eric brought back his much conventional cropped Yardbirds-era hairstyle (as shown on this 2006 photo below) for the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 in June. The long hair makes him less recognizable in the eyes of many fans.

Not for me; When I joined in as Clapton fan in the late 80's he also had long hair, this was in the midst of the Journeyman aera. I like the long hairdo, adds to the credibility of his Rockstar status. It sure feels strange though to discuss EC's haircut on the Fender Forum... let us please stick to the enigma of his equipment and tone.

I started thinking about this the other day -- is his current set-up (guitar/amp) the longest he has stayed with something...he has been using the Twin, for what, over 6 years? that is an eternity for him.

i am thinking the only thing that might give it a run for the money is the marshalls in the 70's w/blackie...but even then i think he was screwing around with dual showmans, music man, etc.

i guess he really likes the tone he is getting these days!

He's been using the 57 Twin much longer than that; to my recollection he started using the 57 Twin during the blues tour following the From the Cradle album, alongside the Soldanos he was using at the time. So that was... 1994! Since then he has briefly used Cornell amps and a VibroKing but went back to the 57 Twin after that. Chances are the '57 Twin' are actually a whole bunch of 57 Twins....

He also stayed with Music Man amps pretty long; throughout the 70's until the early 80's when he switched back to Marshalls again.

The one thing I would like to know is what amp he used on the 1970 show that was captured on the Live at the Fillmore / Derek & the Dominos In Concert CD's.... anybody :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Anyone seen the video of them playing Goin Down (Winwood + Clapton) at the opening gig?

Besides the awesome power that Eric's rhythm had in the song, his singing and soloing were sick!

---

In terms of his hair (lol)... if I must choose I'd pick the mid-length c. 2008 when I first saw him at PNC. It seems right.

I think the long hair works for him... he looked really good on Leno's show and at MSG when I saw him.

Of course EC briefly used Cornells and VibroKings in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, but he switched back to Marshall amps for a brief time in the summer of 2004 when he brought Crash III onstage.

Image

I saw him playing Crash III and (later) Crash I behind a pair of Marshall JCM800s. He even removed his glasses while performing "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" on the first Crossroads Guitar Festival held at Dallas in June and do this in several occasions during his US tour that followed the Cotton Bowl concerts (shown here with Crash I at MSG NY in June 29th). For the Robert Johnson sessions, Clapton ran his Crash III through a '57 tweed Twin.

Eric finally decided to use the '57 Twin exclusively after 2005 and his preferences moved from the Crash Graffiti Canvas paintjobs to the more conventional finishes (Blackie, Brownie, Dark Pewter and Daphne Blue).

I saw EC around that time too (i.e. 2004).... playing a 57 Twin. I still maintain that the JCM800's were strictly used to drive the Leslie cabinet.

Clapton had a strong resemblance to his early Yardbirds teenager days in the early 1960s with his tightly cropped haircut, the shaven face and of course, without his glasses! Only the Strat, his jeans and dark blue T-shirt make the big difference.

IMO, Eric looked younger with that particular appeal. :)

Back in the '60s with his Gretsch 6120:

... and in 2004 with his Fender Crash I:

Did you've noticed something different between the past and the present? Your opinion matters!

i dont remember if it was on this forum or another forum, but a member was recollecting seeing him on that tour - he swore that he was using Marshalls at the time....if his recollection is trustworthy and it being doubtful that he would change during the tour, it would seem to be marshalls.

i was factoring in the use of the Cornell and the vibroking - which each lasted at least one tour (i think the cornell was something like 2 years or so?) at any rate, he has pretty consistently come back to the twin - your post just reminded me that he was using that set up at Hyde Park in 1996, so even if there were some flirtations with other amps, he came back home to the twin:)

Do you mean the 60's???

EC was in the Yardbirds from '63 to '65. :D

Thanks for the info. I've just edited my recent thread.

Clapton has the talent to change his own persona, supposedly to suit a particular period of his carreer. Because of these constant changes, it's almost difficult to recognize him.

I wonder for which reason he decided to brought back that early '60s appeal during the MSG gigs of June 29-30, 2004. The cropped haircut, shaved face and the absence of glasses rejuvenated him completely!

Very interesting to again hear of it being Marshall amps. I've gone through my Clapton interview archive and found no definite answer on this; EC always remarks he used (big) Fenders (i.e. Dual Showman) or Marshalls while live with Derek & the Dominoes. Elsewhere on the net (can't find it back though.....) I've even noticed someone remarking that it were solid state Marshalls :!: :?:

I'm sure someone out there knows for sure... somebody must have taken some pictures that night....

I would be a shame if we could not find this out, IMHO it's one of the best live sounds ever obtained by EC.

Ok, I did it.

Decided to get the 2010 LTD Grey. I have a few different vintage Strats, Ibanez Artcore (that I love), but once I picked up my EC I was in love. There is nothing like the feel of this neck (at least for me, and I'm a Rosewood guy). I started to play it like I've had it for years. Custom Shop knocked this one out of the park, perfect piece of art. Now I just can't seem to put it down.

I love playing it clean and add a bit of boost. The other day I dimed the boost, TBX and Amp. Set my guitar at 6~7, stomped on a distortion and tube screamer. Holy SH*T, this baby can bring the house down. I don't look at this as an investment, but a lifetime keeper.

Thank you CS for such a fine instrument. And EC for the inspiration!
Fan forever.

And yet another happy customer! Fender really seems to have hit the nail on this series.

May I enquire with what case the axe came; ltd edition black CS or standard tweed CS?

Ah, just saw your new post in the Ask ME section. Good to see that the spec on the Fender CS website was changed again. Remains the question on how many guitars were shipped in tweed instead of black, but that'll probably kept hidden deep in the Fender archive.
