What's on the last few frets of the Koch and Nocaster?

It's a fret board cover, keeps the strings from constantly resting on the frets. It's a clear piece from the nut back, though the brigde end has a thin piece of foam on it. That's the dark spot you see. Makes it really east to clean the strings too.

This instrument simply amazes me. I can't normally believe what I listen to when my friend plays it. I have tried my fingers on it couple of times (owner is very fussy and don't like me touching it) and what comes out is tragic. I have to learn to handle it primarily.

Nevin1985 is correct that is the finish checking done at the Custom Shop. The "66 is a closet classic and with the Firemist Silver finish the checking looks awesome.

Here's mine. One off in vintage white, '57 body shape, mint green guard, quartersawn maple neck, nitro finish all around. Pickups are what comes on the Gilmour Strat, and the S-1 switch activates the neck pickup. I love this guitar.
