Hi Folks,

First post. I hope you can save me some time.

I’m considering ordering a custom shop strat. My current guitar is a Jimmie Vaughan Tex Mex, which I really like. It was my first guitar, and I don't know if it's because it's what I learned on or if i just got lucky and picked a good guitar when I started - but no other guitar I try feels as good to me. But, I do need a 2nd guitar and I decided I may as well go all the way on this next one - get that 'lifetime' instrument (hopefully).

So, I want to know which custom shop model guitar would have a neck similar to the JV. It’s got a soft ‘V’ shape, apparently a custom shape for this guitar. 9.5 radius and maple freboard. I also like the finish and the tint of the neck, the frets, etc. Basically, I like everything about this guitar and want a custom shop version of it :) - with one exception - I’d prefer my CS guitar to have a different flavor of pickups. I like the tone of this guitar, but don't want two that sound alike - so perhaps something a little mellow? I like old fashion quack and twang. I don’t care if they’re noiseless or not. I do like the tone John Mayer’s getting these days. I mostly play bluesy rock and my favorite player is Jimi.

I want to stay in the low/mid 2K price range.

What would you recommend for me?

Thanks!

Really? Not MSRP - street price. I see quite a few CS strats at the big online dealers in that price range - (Dave's guitar, Wildwood, etc). The majority I would say. I thought that's kind of the entry level for a CS that's not custom built to spec.

I would check out the Time Machine '56 model. If you are looking for classic Strat appointments and a chunky V shape like you Jimmie Vaughan model, that one comes closest when you are shopping in the custom shop range, as far as I know. The Clapton model also has a V neck, but it's a thinner and more pronounced V shape.

loggerboots, you might check out some of the used guitars from some of the showcase dealers. For instance: http://wildwoodguitars.com/used/electric.php
