I have a cherry red electric fender starcaster and I haven't played it in a long time so it has a lot of dust on it. And I was wondering how i should polish it, and if a regular towel would damage the body? Please any answers I can take into consideration.

Use microfiber cloth with a little soap and that will make it

Use a soft, clean cotton cloth, such as a strip of an old T-shirt, to remove and dirt, grime and dust from your guitar. If your guitar needs a bit of extra cleaning, particularly on the fingerboard, use a light mist of lemon oil. Make sure that the oil dries completely before you add polish. For easy polishing and best results, remove your strings so that you can get to those hard-to-reach areas. :)

I have a translucent Bing Cherry CS Strat and have found a clean microfiber cloth and a little Martin Guitar Polish works well. I'm sure the the Fender polish works as well but I had the Martin polish and at the rate of use, I will probably have the same bottle for quite a while.

Dean Malarkey makes a specific microfiber for nitrocellulose finishes that works well. Gibson pump polish is made specific for nitrocellulose finishes and is the best I've come across.

Be careful!!

Only use lemon oil on Rosewood fretboards.

Not reccomended for Maple.

I use the Fender/Meguir's polish, with sponges. To wipe down, I use microfibre cloths, and a shammy. I always get great results, pity the polish is to be discontinued

I tried some of this on my guitar last night and it's useless, didn't make a difference at all.

Differance to what?
It's a cleaner polish with trace amounts of lacquer to sea the finish.

Caution: I just tried the Fender/Meguir's instrument care kit on my 1988 '62RI that had a lot of grime and sweat. The guitar looked awesome, "real" relic'd, not bought :-). Because the body is nice and dry (22 years old), it just sucked up the cleaner and I could barely wipe it off! I had to go over it may times. Finally to the point I could use the polish, and it really did leave a very nice finish (honestly, kind of miss all the grime now).

So I'm wondering if there is something to treat the wood with first, orange oil or something?? Meguirs has always had great products (car nut), but dry body it tough to work with.

I use a little Gibson pump polish for a shine, but for general cleaning and wiping down I use a microfiber cloth like this!
