Hi all,

I'm in the process of ordering a CS Strat through my local dealer. I've sent him pictures of the exact guitar I want built by the CS, basically a 3-tone sunburst "Closet Classic '71" with a maple fretboard. The owner is asking me for a full upfront payment with the promise of a great price. Is this normal procedure? What should I expect from a guitar ordered from the CS as opposed to somebody buying the separate parts and doing it himself? Am I being too paranoid? :)

In short, how do I make sure before paying upfront that I'm getting a legit Fender Custom Shop guitar?

Thanks in advance,
M.

Hi Mike,
It's The Guitar Broker in Weston, FL.
For the record, I'm more or less close to the shop so I'm planning to drive up there with the payment if everything goes fine. What should I expect from him?
Thanks!

If it's a custom order (which it sounds like), you need to make sure you are getting EXACTLY what you want.

All of our Showcase Dealers know what they are doing, but how you pay, what you pay, when you pay is between you and them.

Hey Max -

I've never heard of anything like that before....ALL UP FRONT. Hopefully they'll be giving you an AMZING price eh?

I've done a fair number of one-off orders with a few different dealers....my experience has been.....that some ask for a percentage upfront (like 10% as an example). Some have a fixed amount (Like $500 down). and some, after you've done a few orders with them don't make you put anything down at all.

Sounds like a cool strat...Best of luck :D

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I found some positive feedback online about the dealer so I'm going to fork the money all up front this time.
I'll make sure to take a look at the custom order to see that everything is as expected. Is there any sort of "official" Custom Shop receipt or something I should expect from the dealer?

A photocopy of the CS order form would be fine

Thanks for the replies.
Just to make sure everything is good I have another question. This is the (almost) exact guitar I want made by the CS. It's a replica of the main Strat Ritchie Blackmore used to record Machine Head in 1971. I'll add the "synchronized tremolo" decal to mine -like the original one used to have. The chip in the back is not part of the original "Closet Classic" treatment:

The dealer quoted me $2950 for it, what do you guys think of that price.

Thanks,
mAx

Couple of things:
1) We've never made and we won't right now make a replica of Ritchie's Strat.
2) Everything I've been told (by Ritchie) is that a black Strat was the main guitar that was used on Machine Head.

Be careful

Wow Mike, are you telling me that I cannot order from the CS a guitar just like the one pictured in the link I posted? Or are you just talking about an "official" replica? I'm definitely not expecting Fender to do that. But I still want a guitar similar to the example pictures I linked to.

Good info about the black '68 being Ritchie's main in Machine Head. I guess that's going to be my next guitar if I get the sunburst one...

Thanks a lot.
M.

You can order a Strat like the one in the link, that doesn't say anything about Blackmore.

OK, I ordered the CS Strat, paid all up front. After meeting Craig, the owner of The Guitar Broker in Weston, FL, I'm very confident I'll get the guitar I want.

However, to my request, he wrote down some of the specs on a generic purchase order instead of a Fender Custom Shop one. I don't know the procedure and although I trust him -he has a lot of experience ordering from the CS- I can't help but feeling a bit lost about the whole thing.

What do you guys recommend? Will I get at some point contacted by the CS directly to make sure everything is as I want or will the whole process be handled directly by the dealer? When -if at all- am I supposed to get a copy of the CS order from him.
