Just bought a 56 NOS strat, 2 color sunburst with gold hardware, certificate from custom shop dates this strat as having been made in 2001.
Ironically, it looks as if it has spent the last 9 years in it's case unplayed, there are still small bits of clear plastic stuck below the screw-heads, as well as the whole strat is immaculate.
Why would one buy one of these excellent strats to sit in a case unplayed.
(Instruments are made to be played, unplayed instruments die an ignominious death.)

One issue however, the tuners are in need of replacement, 1/2 to 3/4 deadspot is not acceptable. I cannot imagine it left Fender CS that way.

1st question:
going to install the GOTOH Vintage tuners, (direct retrofit)
locking versions or not, has anyone used either and was a difference noticed as far as tone.

2nd question:
Have yet to switch to the 5 way switch, (also planned)
the vintage pick ups are nice but I'm thinking to switch to the hotter vintage 54's, has any one made the change, for the better or???

I'm playing thru 3 different amps.
(1) Hot Rod Deluxe black and tan, (2) Champ 600 (3) a circa late 50's Magnatone 410 custom.

I traded a 96 CS Larrivee acoustic and a 2001 standard strat with DiMarzio's. ( I decided to buy back the Larrivee however. The standard strat did not work for me, having owned it for 2 to 3 years.

Thank You for any info to all

Ok, that Magnatone is out of the question.
Send it to me, and I'll send you a nice NEW Fender amp.

Hi Mike!
Do I detect a note of Fender bias :=) ???
Hypothetically, which model of Fender's new amp's?
I will say I'm very attached to this Magnatone, it has character, well earned I might add.. I traded a 12 string EKO acoustic (bought in Italy in 74) to a good friend of mine from Front Royal VA in 1975.

Update, concerning the 56 NOS strat, I had the 3 way switched to the 5 way switch and lowered the bridge pickup, big difference in sound, not so biting, it's funny but the tone grows on you, but I'm comparing the 56 to a Mex Strat.(used to be a power deluxe strat) outfitted with SCN pick-ups. I did not like the switch/pickup setup and the tone was not what I was looking for.

Mike, I've watched the Custom Deluxe video sample more times than i can remember ( old age senility), would I be correct in assuming that the tone's of this Custom Shop Deluxe with the 69's and Texas Specials falls in between the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless PU's and the 56 NOS.?
I'm definitely planning on ordering an aged cherry sunburst model this late spring or summer, if there is a chance that this model will be discontinued, will there be an announcement ?

thanks

Mmmmmmm....I don't like this part of the forums because I do like to cut things square.

If I have my way, and can get it done in time, I would like to retire it after this year. That's not saying that it will be gone next year, that's just me saying I would like to do something else.

I can definitely understand that, I'm going on 3 years renovating an 1840 Cape, from the ground up,major structural issues in the additions added in the 1970's. It is all custom work, fir trim casings, cherry floors, spanish tiles, etc..etc... A new project will be welcome.

One question on the Custom deluxe aged cherry sunburst. Is it possible to order it with gold hardware and abalone dots instead of the clay dots ?

Thanks
