I assume the cap is wired between the middle and end lugs of the volume pot? (the end lug that is not grounded) If so it would be a "treble bleed" cap. 0.05uF is rather large for a treble bleed cap, however. If the tolerance is "Z" as pictured then the actual value can be as large as 0.09uF! Is there anything else in there, like a resistor, with the cap?

'681' means 680pF = 0.68nF = 0.00068uF

About the right size for a 'treble bleed' cap, I suspect this value was a selected to suit the guitar (on production models a slightly larger one is fitted, 1nF from memory)

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of treble bleed, my Nocaster came with one (had 'modern wiring') and I removed it promptly.

EDIT: BTW, those ceramic caps are inexpensive, I believe about 10 - 20 cents each from just about any electronics store

EDIT2: Looks like 680pF is the production value, afterall. See Am Deluxe wiring diagram http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdf_temp1/stratocaster/0101000_02B/SD0101000_02BPg2.pdf. Part number 0011435002

Well, I only have telecasters and on teles treble bleed with a single cap is the norm AFAIK.

Here is an article that explains treble bleed:
http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/potm.htm

I've actually experimented with various values and I didn't like any of the variations... but of course YMMV.

EDIT: I should stress that whether one has treble bleed does depend on the guitar (as well as personal preferences). I like my guitars somewhat "darker" / "fat".
