Im looking to buy a custom shop strat, however there are no guitar shops that carry customs around me for me to test drive. Believe it or not, like almost every other strat player, Im looking to find "Stevie's tone", Can someone please tell me which custom strat will be the best to achieve this. Right now Im thinkin a 60's relic, any help would be greatly apprieciated

As I see it the closest your going to get is a '59 Timemachine with the stock Fat 50's pickups swapped out for Texas Specials. I'm sure that you already know that the "Number One" was a '59.

The neck on the SRV Artist Series guitar has more wood...what Fender calls a "D, with a 12 inch radius. Contact the Custom Shop and ask them if they will build the guitar as specified above: '59 Timemachine, with SRV Artist Series neck specs, and Texas Special pickups.

Get a quote.

Go into the Custom Shop website, find the nearest Showcase Dealer and go see them. Tell them you've been talking to members of the Fender Community in the online Custom Shop Forum about building a guitar with certain specs. Present the specs to them as I suggested and ask them if it can be done regular Custom Shop or if it must be Masterbuilt.

The usual process is for them to submit the design specs to the Custom Shop and get a quote back. You should also ascertain if the price they are giving you is MSR or 'street.' Expect a $3K-$5K range.

Keep in mind that the Custom Shop builds a line of limited production instruments of their own design as shown on line, as well as instruments to consumer's spec requests which is what you are seeking.

The current offerings are on the Custom Shop website. You can also access the current MSR prices on their website. This will give you an idea of numbers. Websites such as Wildwood Guitars, and Dave's Guitars are also representative of costs for the line at dealer's price. Sometimes they are the same. No discount.

Keep us posted.

I was stubbling around and found this on an ultimate-guitar thread

"This is perhaps the most familiar Stratocaster that Stevie Ray played and it was also his favorite. This guitar was a battered 1963 Stratocaster with a 1962 neck. Stevie believed that the body was made in 1959, but a recent examination of the guitar by several Fender employees confirms that it was a 1963 model. (In Stevie Ray Vaughan. Part 1, I made a mistake, it was a 1963 model, not a 1959 model)."
Here is the link and I was wondering how true this is?

Thus another jumping off point for the OP to begin designing his concept guitar. The CS '63 NOS already has the Texas Specials. All that needs to be done is change the neck profile.

Doc, I purchased a custom 60's relic in a sunburst from wildwood guitars and have had it about a week now. First of all let me strat out by saying the guys at wildwood guitars are the best, and I have never had better customer service anywhere from a guitar center to a walmart. I talked with steve there, and told him what I was looking for and thank god he picked this one out for me. It has a slab board with a 59' chunker C john english style neck, which I love!!!!, 6105 frets, 9.5 in radius, and a AA flamed maple neck. Again I cant say how helpful Wildwood Guitar was, because Steve personally tried out 3 different guitars in every aspect and told me the pros and cons of each, and although Id never met the guy, I trusted him with my life, and Im SOOOO glad I did. It is everything Ive every wanted from a guitar, and I have truely found MY "number one" So if anyone is thinking or looking to buy a custom shop guitar and like me was over 400 miles away from the nearest custom shop dealer and cant try them out for yourself, give the guys at Wildwood a call, YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!!!!!

That is an awesome story of a great customer service. I do like their site and their prices. I have a similar story that I wanted to share.
My store is fast becoming the Music Gallery in Chicago.
The owner Frank, personally tried out every team built Clapton he had in stock and found one that in terms of tone and sparkle, that if possible,
could stack against a Clapton Masterbuild. I live near the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia. Seals are closer to me than ANY guitar store let alone a Customshop dealer. Online customer service is getting better and is fast becoming more important in this wierd age of buying a guitar without trying it out.
I do know that if I wasn't happy, he would have taken it back. Now I am building 2 Masterbuild Becks through Frank and his store. Frank was so helpful with the process, patient, informative.
Glad to hear there are a few stores out there that have that personal touch.

I am pleased that you have found what you were looking for, and the professional expertise to make it so. Suggest you get yourself a very large glass jar and start throwing all your loose change into it at the end of every day. This 60's of yours is certainly your first, but by no means your last in a very long line of guitars to come.

Stay close.
