I ended up with a Wildwood '10' '59 Strat...
It's Team built.

It's a sick guitar. I'm seriously blown away.
I'm not not sure a Master Built could be any better.

I was torn between the Master Built version or Team built.
Master Build's come with a premium that in my mind did not justify
the additional cost for the same exact guitar.

Are Master Build's worth the additional cost?
Yes... If you think it does. You are getting exactly what you pay for.
A guitar built by a Master Builder.

In the end each guitar is a unique animal, and that's one aspect that keeps your options wide open when selecting a guitar.

Thanks for all the input.

That's a special order guitar. A kind of FSR comissioned by a Showcase dealer.
Under those circumstances it damned well better be awesome.

Do enjoy it :!: 8)

I think if you are especially going to spend that kind of money you should try the guitar really meticulously in person and then decide if it is worth buying.I never order a guitar from a catalogue anymore....you never how great it will be until you play it for yourself....regardless of it's status.Sure the masterbuilts are great guitars.... on paper. How can you tell if you will connect with it or not though without playing it?That is a lot of blind faith.I've tried some 4000$ guitars that were awesome and many that were crap and some 250$ ones that were magical. You need to consider that, yes, maybe a guitar is good but not so much for you as for someone else.Good luck on your purchase,I hope you find the one that you will cherish for a lifetime....just don't rush that decison, let it find you.

Sensible and reasonable advice always. The question is whether or not Wildwood sells guitars via online purchase on approval. Perhaps the OP can let us know if they have a return policy. Then the question becomes, does the next buyer get a guitar someone else already played. At least, on a person to person transaction, you can order a guitar and take it right out of the box.

At one time I did agree that the only way to go when buying a guitar is in person.
How else can you really know if it's right for you?

Saying that...
Many people do not have access to a large selection of guitars of the same model to try.

How many '59 Custom Shop Strats are at the local shop?
For many people they are stuck with the big chains like Guitar Center
where every kid plays the guitars off the rack and the selection is mediocre at best.

No Matter what you'll always be limited to the supply you have access to.
IMO Online buying opens up your options exponentially to finding a real gem.

There are some online dealers who understand this and have built a solution into their business model.
And do it Right.

Wildwood is one of them.

The selection is insane.
There are dozens and dozens and dozens of strats to choose from the same model.
All high res-pictures of the actual guitar.

I explained what I was looking for in a Strat. Tone wise, Neck Feel.
I selected 6 guitars I was interested in. I could have chose as many
as I wanted. They pulled out each guitar and gave me a tone report
on the guitars and even played one I ended up with over the phone.
They would have played'em all for me over the phone if I asked.
The sales guy was a really good player.

Now of course this is not anything near playing it yourself.
Nothing can compare, but that does not mean the guitar won't blow your mind when you play it.
IMO - The odds are more in your favor than the
one you found locally here and there.

You have to put trust into the professional on the other end.
This isn't a kid at Guitar Center.

These guys do this all day long.
They know guitars. They have an excellent reputation.
Believe me they aren't staying in business by selling locally.
They sell guitars all over the world.

I could have easily returned the guitar if I was not satisfied.
I'm not sure what the return policy duration is 24/48 hours...
I dunno... I didn't need to act on it but they ensured me if I
was not happy for any reason I could return the guitar.
So yes if I returned it someone else may wind up with it.
If I returned it it would be in pristine condition. If you ask me
much better than any guitar dozens of people have played
at your local shop.

Also in my case the model I ended up with is only available at this particular dealer.
So unless you hop on a plane your not going to play it before you purchase it.

I've also purchased Higher end Les Paul's through online reputable dealers. They are exceptional.

If you buy from the right dealers chances are you'll get a
Guitar much better than any you'll find at Guitar Center or your local small dealer.

I would only advise buying online from reputable dealers with a return policy. In this case you should have no fear of buying online.

Here a pic of my Evil Strat

eldiablo, interesting post. Before Christmas I was looking at a black Krause-built Clapton guitar at Wildwood. I thought that having a guitar made by the same guy who's building Clapton's current guitars would be very cool! If it wasn't for the fact that I just could not swing that much cash before Christmas I probably would have gotten it. Fortunately for me I didn't buy it; mistake though was that I started to look around the Wildwood website and then discovered their 10s! Oh man, I can hardly sleep at night! Those WW 10 59 Strats are just driving me absolutely crazy!

I recently got a WW 59 and sent it back. Unless you have big hands you'll find it bigger than the 56/10, which I find perfect.

The experience also reminded me of to buy guitars that I can try only. Having excellent Krause Strats already as a reference, I felt the WW 59 was not the best of the lot. It wasn't bad, but since their prices are on the high side, having such a large turnover, I did not feel like paying that much for an unexceptional piece. Thankfully their return policy allows for a short trial period, and paying for shipping both ways is still cheaper than flying to CO.

Tiglath, what neck profile did you have on the WW 59 that you returned? Not sure if I interpreted your post correctly, but was the neck the only issue you had with it or were there other things too? What neck profile is on your WW 56?

As I said it was a 59 profile. They describe it like this:

"59 Large C Neck - .894" at the 1st fret - .970" at the 12th fret, Large tapered C neck with bigger "shoulders" than the Mid 60's neck, a chunky C shape."

Up the neck became a bit of a stretch for me, whereas the boat neck isn't.

The neck was not the only issue. This was going to be the MB I paid most for, and it wasn't the best of my MBs, by far. There was nothing terribly wrong in particular but the parts did not seem to came together too well. I did not like the Cruz pickups. I can see people who like hot pickups liking them, but I like the vintage sparkle and chime, and they just didn't have it, and without it a Strat is not a Strat for me. It's all a matter of taste, mostly, and I understand they must cater to everybody's.
