Hi,
Just wondering if a jazzmaster tremolo bridge would fit on a strat,if you were to take the original bridge and saddles out and the springs from the back ?...It looks like it would just sit over the gap where the old bridge was.Im looking to customise my Strat and wanted to know if anybody has put a Jazzmaster tremolo bridge on theirs.
Cheers

Well, you can do just about anything to a guitar especially a solid body but that would be a significant chop job and you'd want a good guitar builder to do it for you. You couldn't just drop in a JM system, that's not going to work.

If you're thinking of modding a trem equipped Strat then you'd need to actually fill in the trem cavity to start with, then drill two holes for the JM bridge posts - it can't seat on air, you're gonna need to get some solid wood in there. Remember with the JM the bridge and tremelo system are two separate units, whereas on your Strat they are of course one unit. If you installed the JM trem on a hardtail Strat it would be easier, but that's obviously not your idea right now.

The JM rocking bridge will need to go where the saddles are on the strat trem, to maintain the correct scale length. Then you'd have to route for the JM trem system behind the bridge. The trem system would end up closer to the bridge than on a JM because the Strat body doesn't have as much length behind the bridge as a JM. But that wouldn't be bad, a closer trem will give you a slightly sharper break angle over the bridge making it more stable, a little more sustain, and less of the strings jumping out of the threaded barrells that act as saddles. It won't sound like a JM of course, but you'd have that shallow cool trem. I'd recommend using the saddles from a Mustang bridge, as so many JM owners do, because it's an improved design and solves a few problems in one go.

It'd be an interesting guitar, but not a simple job to build it.

Never liked it on the Jazzmasters or Jaguars  from the day they were born. Would have preferred it the other way 'round... but it's your idea....go for it.

Uh, the other way to approach this is - why not save up and buy a Jazzmaster? Then you'd have both!
