I found a strat that was billed as a "62/65 Stratocaster". When I saw it in person the first time, the headstock decal looked poorly applied or like something had happened to it. I thought it might be a fake until I flipped it over and it had a Laser printed custom shop logo.

The body is a color that I can't quite match by looking at on the net. I think its either "candy green" or "sherwood green". It is a forest green with a light metallic flake.

It has a 3 position blade that simply selects the neck, mid, or bridge pickups individually.

The neckplate has a serial stamped on it "V168558" at the top

Inside the neck pocket, there are several markings. There is a large "53807" preceded by a number or character i cant make out. It also has a "3" stamped into the wood.

The underside of the neck is stamped with a custom shop logo and signed by 2 people. It's dated 98' and has a series of markings that read "nos gstrv 309"

They also have a "65/62 Stratocaster" which makes me wonder if the neck that belongs to the other body and visa versa?

see the pictures below and advise me on what I have? I have some extra time to make up my mind on returning the purchase, but it was only priced in the $800s. I feel like I got ripped off or got a steal but I cant figure out which. Thanks for any help in advance...

If it's the real deal, can anyone point me to a link describing exactly what it is or who built it..?

According to the pictures and my limited knowledge, I'd call it a '99 NOS ("New old stock") '65 Stratocaster, in probably Sherwood Forest Green.
The logo looks like the CBS era logo, and the rest of the feaures pictured, including the dates on the neck and neck pocket seem to indicate that. You might try posting in the "Ask Mike Eldred" forum, as Mike is pretty good about knowing Fender history.

rwebbert, where are you from? There is a guitar for sale locally that looks just like that one and is billed as a 62/65. They said that it was a partsocaster, but I find it more than a coincidence that two different people would make the exact same partsocaster with the same parts.

I imagine it's the same one.... Roll Tide by the way.

When I originally went in and picked it up, I was led to believe the "62/65" body neck combination was part of what the Custom Shop had created.

It could be, that the salesman was really busy, or I didn't listen well enough. I really felt like that's what I was being told.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt tho. When I took it back in and told them that I was being advised to avoid it, their description became a whole lot more accurate and detailed.

Again, I'll chalk it up to a miscommunication and give them the benefit of the doubt.

I also realized I was typing the wrong price. It was actually in the $800 price range.

I ended up with $200 back and a 60th Anniversary American Deluxe w/ S1 switching (S/S/S) Strat.

Thanks for everyones help. After all is said and done, they are sending it to fender to find out exactly what they have. If it really is the combo of parts they say it is, I may go back and consider bringing it home. It played so well, I feel it may have been worth the price anyway.

Well I hate to say it bud, but I put in hold today when I drove into hoover, and I plan on putting 400 on it this week, and getting on the 28th :)

HAHAHA....

If they had it hanging, then they did lie to me about sending it back, but oh well. Hope you enjoy it!

I just got freaked out and didn't feel comfortable after looking at the posts here and thinking I was told it was one thing when it was another.

Like I said, I hope it was all a miscommunication, and if this post and it's replies helped you in your purchase any, then it's all good.

Now you know what marking are inside the neck pocket without having to take it back apart at least!

Hey did you happen to see what pickups are in it, are they the 65s? It sounded good regardless. . Yeah it did help me because I found this by googiling 62/65 because I had never heard of it. It sure does play nice, and seems to be made of at least all American parts. Do you know what case it comes with? The salesman ( Who used to be in Psych class with me at UA) told it was the American Standard case, but I didn't get to see it. I was debating whether to go back and get it, but now that I know that you are lurking in the wings, I am going to go ahead and get it off of hold. :D Also I am pretty sure it was an honest mistake. Most guys at GC don't know anything about the gear they are hocking. I remember when I bought my Voodoo Lab PP2+ and asked if the power cables were included and the guy tried to sell me a one spot!

the V...serial# on the neck plate isn't a Custom shop #. Guitars with this type of serial no. are american made Vintage Reissues - not Custom shop guitars. Looks like its a Custom shop neck with a "standard" amreican made vintage reissue body IMO.

Yeah, they admitted as much when I went to GC and asked about it.

so I ended up getting the guitar for 10% off or 889 out the door. I put 280 down on it and should be picking it up Monday. Its weird that someone else here bought it first.

I actually thought of that! I'm also considering moving everything to a nitro sonic blue body. I can order a one piece Alder body from warmoth for less than 400, and do the painting myself. For now I will leave it intact and see how much I like the color. With the Cypress Mica strat I think I may have too much green
