I posted a similar thread on the "Ask Mike Eldred" forum. I need to get some of my questions answered this weeked, so I hope it's all right if I re-post some of my questions here.

I recently purchased a Jeff Beck Custom Shop Stratocaster. According to the dealer, the 11-gauge strings that were on the guitar are the size from the Fender Custom Shop. The Custom Shop specs for the Jeff Beck Strat say it has D’Addario 10-gauge strings (.010, .013, .017, .026, .036, .046). Can anyone confirm whether the Jeff Beck Custom Shop Stratocaster ships from Fender with 10- or 11-gauge strings?

After buying the guitar, I changed the strings to D'Addario 11-gauge strings (.011 to .049), which is what I usually use. I've been having trouble getting sufficient resonance out of the A and D strings (mainly the D string) when they're played open. I checked the string height at the LSR Roller Nut at the high and low E strings to see if they are at Fender specs for the LSR nut (.018" - .020" clearance between the first fret and bottom of the strings). The high E is slightly higher than .020", but that side of the nut has a shim under it and can be easily lowered. The low E, however, is slightly more than .030" (the three is not a typo), and that side of the nut does not appear to be shimmed. I have not taken the nut off to verify this yet, but there does not appear to be any crack between the bottom of the nut and the nut slot like there is on the high E side.

I noticed that the plain E and B strings (.011 and .014) seat neatly between the ball bearings in the nut slots. The plain G (.018) string seats almost between the ball bearings. The wound D (.028) rests slightly within the concave between the ball bearings, the wound A (.038) slightly higher, and the wound E (.049) rests atop the ball bearings. My understanding is that the LSR nut is supposed to accommodate string gauges up to .013 to .056, so I'm assuming my observation is the way the LSR nut is supposed to work. Can anyone confirm this?

There is not a whole lot of information about the LSR Roller Nut on fender.com or the internet, which I assume is because there's not much you can (or should) do with it other than adjust it for height. If anyone has other information that I should be aware of, please let me know or point me to a URL. If the LSR nut is supposed to work as described above, does this mean that in order to get the .018" - .020" string clearance at the first fret will require me to lower the nut on the low E side? In the event that the strings are supposed to seat between the ball bearings, like the E and B strings do, how can the LSR nut slots be adjusted (widened) to fit the larger gauge strings?

I've read other forums on fender.com where people have resolved string buzzing from the LSR nut by switching brands or by using a different type of string (e.g., flat wound instead of round). Would switching string brands or using a different string type be a way to get the strings to seat properly (assuming they aren't already)? If a different type, any recommendations?

Thanks.

When I first posted this thread, I did not think I had a string buzzing issue with the LSR nut. After studying my guitar more today and listening to the problem with the D string, I think that there is a slight buzz, which could only be coming from the nut. It's very subtle, but it explains to some degree why the D string is the one string with the least amount of resonance.
