I just realized my COA does not match my CS '60 Strat that I purchased one year ago at GC. The inspection tag/GC receipt match the serial number on the backplate of the guitar. The COA however does not match anything...

It sat in it's case the entire time and I never ever looked. Guess that's what happens when you own too many...

My question is, how do I correct this issue? How can I obtain the correct COA for my guitar? I have all original tags, receipt from GC with my name on it, and everything.

It sounds like GC grabbed the incorrect COA and tossed it in my case?

Please tell me I can bypass Guitar Center and go directly through Fender for a replacement COA..

The regular procedure is to contact GC so they can apply to Fender for a new correct COA for you.
Alas I understand you have to give them back the one you have, and when you know GC...

Ditto!! I had that problem last year, with my Gilmour, no less. The manager at the GC I deal with handled the exchange. I actually have both of them. They researched the problem and found that it happend on the line, assigning the numbers. So they sent me a second with the correction.

If your particular GC cannot handle this with dispatch, you're spending good mony in the wrong store and tell them you'll find another source for your Custom Shop orders.

went back to the GC today. turns out the COA in my case was from a guitar GC never owned, company-wide. Error at the Fender factory.

2-3 weeks and my correct COA will be in my hands :) just needed my receipt as proof, took about 20mins, and I was good to go!

I had that problem at my local music store. They tried to give me a deluxe case instead of the Custom shop case which contained the wrong COA. Alain is spot on with the procedure in obtaining the proper COA. Unfortunately for me it was a hassle, they tried to say that Custom Shop Instruments come in deluxe cases. The store dragged their feet on correcting the problem and I had to call Fender corporate to get the ball rolling. I could have cancelled the sale but that strat played so choice, I had to press on.

Regarding cases.....Fender has a lot to learn from PRS. The high end guitars from both companies are comparble price wise, but PRS buries Fender in the quality of the guitar case provided. Having owned both, I can speak to that directly. Not even the case for my Gilmour comes close.

Will carry that ball until I see differently.

Ok so my new COA came in to my local GC... and again, they sent the WRONG one...

They sent me the same one I already had, the incorrect one. The manager said he must have gotten confused and told Fender the wrong number...

Sooooo, another 2-3 weeks and maybe this time it will be my lucky day.

Time to find a new Custom Shop vendor. After this mess is finally straightened out you can tell the manager that he obviously can't cut it and your next guitar will be ordered elsewhere.

Too true ZZ Doc, PRS is fantastic all around. My Les Paul Custom case has had the handle fall off and the outside material is pealing.
