I have asked three dealers for quotes on a new guitar and I am waiting on them to come back to me. In the meantime though I have found one of the 20th Masterbuilts that is not a million miles off being the guitar I have asked for a quote on.

The only differences are colour, Fiesta Red V Candy Tangerine, Relic V Closet Classic and the neck profile is C instead of U

I could easily live with the neck and the colour is not a massive amount apart. My only concern is the closet classic finish as I want a relic look. How does the Closet Classic finish compare to a Relic?

Closet Classic was a style of finish intended to simulate the appearance of a guitar that had been stashed away under the bed (or in a closet....yeah) and only taken out every so often and played a bit, then replaced. I don't know how a guitar would receive any wear at all that way, but never mind.

It's a nice finish, and now that it's not offered on CS guitars it'll perhaps become more sought-after; who knows? There will be some finish checking (little crazed lines in the clear lacquer that tend to show up more in an oblique light), the plastics will be aged to get that parchment colour that plastic acquires eventually whether it's exposed to light or not, the chrome parts will have a bit of a patina to them. CC guitars often have a couple of little dings, for those occasions when you took your precious guitar out from under the bed and then immediately dropped it... heh.

If you do end up going the CC route, you will at least avoid legions of posters saying "Why don't you just buy a cheap guitar and drag it behind your car?" "Would you buy pre-ripped jeans? I know I wouldn't" "Why don't you buy a new one and then play it for 20 years? Huh? That's a relic!" and "With all due respect, you suck"

Heh... for what it's worth, I'm very attached to my '66 relic. I would have been just as happy with a Closet Classic version, though, and it could be argued that the CC offers more latitude for you to stamp your own personality (i.e. make your own mistakes) on your guitar.

Do an image search on examples of each, and you'll get a good idea of the differences. Keep in mind that the CC treatment is quite subtle and hence doesn't photograph as well, but when it's in your hands it's a very different story.

The CC will only have some checking on the finish. I have a oly white CC and you can hardly see it unless you look hard which is what I like. There really is no wear on the gutiar.

Cool, I stand corrected! :)

I was sure I'd seen some other signs of wear, but perhaps I'm thinking more of a light Relic treatment... there do seem to be quite a few flavours of Relic out there.

Thanks for the info. I have seen a few that have checking and a few light dings but the guitar I am looking at has maybe only one or two chips.

It really boils down to whether I can accept not having my 'exact' spec but the trade off is being able to have a Masterbuilt for less than even a Teambuilt.
