I'm looking for an EC signature guitar with lace sensors. I've seen one but I need your help to see the veracity.

The ad says that the serial number indicates that it is a 1988 model. However, it seems that after a research from the seller that she's actually a 1992 model and the paper work that comes with the guitar is marked 1992.

I've read that signature models used serial number SE8xxx and SE9xxx for some years(although they should be from 1988 or 1989). Is that correct?

I'm leaving some pics of the guitar I saw, the decal seems little weird too:

I appreciate any advice on this.

It doesn't look like a CS guitar, but there are no pics of the back either. What paperwork comes with it?

The signature is on the front of the headstock , making this an artist series not a custom shop guitar. The CS version has the sig on the back of the headstock.

At least as I understand it anyway.

It should be an artist series. According to the seller, from the paper work it says 1992.

Here's a picture of the back:

Could the neck serial number date 1988 and be a 1992? Does the decal on the below picture seems to be original?

Thanks for your advice. (Sorry the url tags seems not to work with these urls)

Hi Mike!!

This dating inconsistency was the subject of a post of mine, and also spurred by two Clapton guitars sold in the 1999 auction.....described as 1987, one with an SE8XXXX and the other with an SE9XXXXX.

At time, it appears that there has been no rhyme or reason with respect to these numbers, but my curiosity was piqued with respect to Christies, in that these are collector's pieces so to speak, yet the inconsistencies passed without further explanation.

Any thoughts.

SE8 = 88
SE9 = 89

...probably. Most likely.

can you pull the back off and see if it is blocked, or is the block supplied with the instrument? :)

...there should be a 9v battery in there as well.

.....we've not contended this until now. Why do they appear on guitars designated 1987 or circa 1987 by Christies, and sometimes else where.

This whole business really began with the question of the of the green guitar on ebay which had an SE8 headstock but was "really" a '94, and the seller stating that Fender used stuff that had been laying around on the shelf for awhile.

See this same post on the Stratocaster forum and the photos of Frantic's guitar neck. The neck end is stamped Sept 1989 but has an SE 8 headstock number.

I questioned you on that directly that it appeared. I expect that we truly cannot rely on these dates for any kind of authentication which is unfortunate because it opens the door to fraud.

Doc.

'Certs'(I assume you mean COA's) are fine for the Custom Shop line, and players who can afford them, but what of the earlier guitars which have a vintage interest???....and those coming down the production line today which hopefully players will be looking back on in kind 20 years hence...what of those? :roll:
