The artists were thrilled that they could finally have easy access to real Fender guitars made to their specs. When Mike and I first started, before we even started making the walnut benches, we worked on the Eric Clapton Signature Model. Dan Smith and George Blanda had already begun work on the early instruments, so when we started, we all pitched in to make the final versions and the ones that went to the trade show.

FROM THE JOHN PAGE INTERVIEW BY TOM WATSON

Given the infancy of the new company, and this new concept, the likelihood of all of these individuals having been involved in it should not be discounted. With the amount of information available, and all the 'tools' for counterfeiting at the world's disposal, the fact of this ruse is not surprising.

About the G Blanda sigs, I am not saying they are authentic. I've nothing to compare these to. But up close, it is obvious that the one on the neck pocket had the typical struggle that a felt tip fine pen would have on a relatively unpolished surface.
The G Blanda on the neck heel however is entirely different although quite faint, it is much more fluid. Is it real? That I don't know. I wrote to gblanda@fender.com, with no reply as of yet (I did this late last week so it is not unreasonable).

I've reviewed ME's comments in this thread. I would expect that he has sourced this one out in that I know he views these kinds quite seriously. With time, there may be more to follow, but I would not hold out any hope that that many guitars were built. Nothing in my sources speaks to that volume or design.

Here are the inconsistencies: the string tree is the same as used on the Elite neck but the Clapton was based o a 57RI and would likely have had the vintage string tree. The decals are of a different period as previously noted. The routing for the Elite's neck pickup is continuous with the rout for the preamp board. Yours is separate. The Elite's pickups (whose wiring was modified in the R&D stage) had no pole pieces and were eventually replaced by Lace Sensors. The 21 fret net is a nice touch because the original R&D used one but again, the decals are in the wrong time.

Give the seller the option of refunding your money or spending that much or more in attorney's fees defending a law suit, plus all the publicity you are going to give them on the Fender Forum. Let them know that the Custom Shop is particulary miffed abouth this fraud. See what happens.

The first 'Blackie' Prototype was built by Mike Stevens and is an exact copy of the real Blackie and was finished in early 1988. Here is a pic.

As for the guitar in this thread... so many things are wrong about it... At this point i am not sure if the OP made it himself and is trying to impress people here because if I had spent ~$6k on that guitar I would already be on the phone to the store I bought it from and not messing around here posting... I suspect that's why ME has been silent on this recently... Obvious and sloppy fake... string tree, pickguard, decals, microtilt, no COA, etc., etc., etc. OP, can you post a pic of the 'letter' that claims this is legit?

Here is the first Clapton prototype (1998, Mike Stevens)

I think you should be careful about what you imply or directly accuse people of doing.
You don't know the first thing about me.
Plus the store's name has already been disclosed.
ME Has been forthcoming, though not detailed.
But I have never accused him of conspiracy theory.
I am presenting a guitar that was sold to me as an early proto.
Regarding the first proto in pic, even Stevens acknowledges that when he and John Page took over the C SHop the first protos had already been built. Stevens took the approved work of many months, perhaps years, and finally put it all in the one guitar...the first proto of the final version.
For obviuos reasons, early protos are not final versions. It is well known for example that early protos had 21 not 22 frets, and that the Lace Sensors where decided later, and that the preamp boost was increased from the teens to 25 dB at the request of Eric himself.

I've added to photobucket a pic of the letter that came with the guitar.

"signed" by Yasuhiko Iwanade...

Anyone know his sig?

I am aware and within my statute of limitations ....but isn't fraud a special case?
