Hello good people!

I can't see Stratocaster Pro in the list of instruments at Custom Shop website. Has it been discontinued? + It seems they are in limited quantity on the net . . .

The push 'em and pull 'em. Drawing from some of the commentary Mike Eldred has made relics are the big kahuna at the CS. If they've gone to a relic version at the CS level, you may have to go Masterbuilt if you want NOS.

Doc,

Do you think this relic thing at the custom shop a is a "phase"? Surely, a lot of people want NOS, too. Masterbuilt = more $$$.

As with many other things, I see it as a trend set often by the perfomers themselves. Check out the current bands and you'll see mostly tele's and LP's now.

Less labor involved in doing an NOS I would expect. If I saw something in a relic which I was interested in a NOS version of, I'd contact the Custom Shop and ask for a quote. I don't expect something of that sort should be either Masterbuilt or as costly as a relic.

Doc

Didnt relic'ing start in 96. If so give it five years and it will have lasted as long as CBS did  .

Love it or hate it I cant see it going anywhere for awhile.

+1 to niki. Relicing has been going on for a while and it is going stronger than ever.

If your specs are projected to take more time to put together than average, it will be Masterbuilt. The factor that changes your guitar from Custom Shop to Masterbuilt is time, not money. Naturally, if your specs are very different and/or time consuming, it is gonna cost you. So depending on your specs, you may end up with a Masterbuilt NOS. I did and I couldn't be happier! :D

I just purchased a 2009 Custom Shop Stratocaster Pro Closet Classic. What drew me was the 12" radius fingerboard, the lack of string tree. I've previously owned an Eric Johnson Strat and a Custom Classic also with a 12" radius. I can honestly say that the Pro is my favorite. That is not to say the others were far behind. You can view my see this axe here:

Congrats, and I agree. It's my favorite Strat that we make.

Hi Mike,

Thanks! One of the things I love is that the neck seems a little wider from High E to Low E......there is more playing 'territory'. At least that's the way it feels to my hand. I've always loved the 12" radius and my previous Custom Classic was purchased from McKnight Guitar Co and also had a 12" radius.

I've been a Gibson Les Paul player most of my 40 years of playing. The radius preference might have been a give away. A few years back a happened to play a vintage Stratocaster through a vintage Fender tube amp and IT WAS ALL OVER! I've owned Fender tube amps before but always seemed to play Gibsons through them. Don't get me wrong they sounded great but not like the Fender Strat combination.

I still love Gibsons but Strats are my choice now......of course paired with a Fender tube amp. Oh, I meant to comment on the Eric Johnson Strat. I LOVED that guitar BUT I really disliked the fact that the truss rod adjustment was inaccessible from the headstock. I do tweak my necks from time to time and have always setup my own guitars. I am MUCH happier with this Pro!

Regards,

Joe

Hi Joe-

I am glad she found a good home! I treated her well. (I'd recognize that grain on the headstock anywhere). It really has great sustain - I tihink the 8 1/2 pound weight helps with that.

I bought it new from Music Gallery earlier this year and it was 'pre pleaked'. I hope you get some great enjoyment from it!

Best regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

If it was the one sold on eBay by strummer1960 from St Paul MN then that is the one. It was an incredible buy. I can't imagine being much happier with an axe!

Tom,

One question, was the Pleking done at the factory or post Factory? I've owned Plek'd Les Pauls but never a Fender.

Thanks,

Joe
