Can someone explain the detailed difference between "Team Built" vs. "Masterbuilt" Custom Shop guitars?

I'm assuming that Team Built means regular production-line manufacture, with different people doing different jobs, albeit in a low-numbers high-end environment?

But Masterbuilt? What does the 'master' actually do? Is it just final assembly and setup? Or do they craft your guitar from the bare wood blanks, including neck profiling, fret fitting and finishing? And hand-wire the electrics? Or is it somewhere in-between?

Also, are all the same materials used, or do Masterbuilt have reserved stocks of tonewood etc used just for them?

Thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul
This has been discussed and explained many times.
Just browse through the threads in the Custom Shop Forum and you'll get what you want.

Sorry guys, I don't normally frequent the custom shop forum, so didn't think... I should've done a search for the obvious first.
Cheers,
Paul

Alain's suggestion is appropriate. For the sake of expediency you should know that,s we have responded elsewhere recently, and Mike Eldred has confirmed...'Teambuilt' has been retired. Guitars built by more than one luthier in concert are now termed "Custom Shop". "Masterbuilt" denotes built by one luthier with whom you can have one on one communication during the entire procedure of carrying out the build.

Hence, the difference in price. Also, some orders and spec, due to their uniqueness cannot be Custom Shop built. Fender will reply and tell you if your requirements speak to a Masterbuilt guitar.

Doc.

Doc,

thanks for your reply.

It's a perennial problem with forums that 'old hands' that frequent the forum regularly see the same old discussions again and again, whereas newbies and infrequent browsers dive in asking for information without looking first.

I hadn't realised that the term Teambuilt is no longer used.

Thanks again,
Paul
