As relicing (apart from tribute models ) is up to that day's mood of the CS builder, who will know ??
That's a good collateral side of the Relics

If you put a dent or a scratch in a custom shop relic strat will it's value go down due to that dent or scratch not being "factory"?

Haha

Someone just made the same point on my collector's forum here: http://www.guitar-collector.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=109

... One thing I've always wondered. If you spend big bucks on a brand new Road Worn guitar, do you then look after it carefully so it doesn't get chipped or scratched?!! And if you were buying a used one, would you be looking for "factory-applied scratches only"??!! lol

To me what the guitar may or may not be worth in twenty or thirty years isn't an issue. It's how the guitar plays and sounds that matters. If it's good and you like it, you won't want to sell even if it is worth something someday.

I got to agree with Tex. How it plays, sounds and you like it. New, worn or relic. Kinda like women.

Tis interesting

I have a 60's CS Relic.

When I bought it I set out to Buy a NOS version cos I didn't care for the relic'd thing either. But my main criteria was a great feeling and sounding guitar with a vintage trem - preferably in 3TSB

But I ended up with a Relic - why. Cos it played way better than the others, was much more resonant than the others and suited me perfectly - there was just something about how this guitar felt. Instant bonding

I added some Kinman woodstocks and the K9 harness and it's by far the best sounding guitar I have ever had (in 25+ years)

And the look has grown on me as well. I get lots of comments like "wow that looks really old" or "you play your guitars hard" I just smile

It's all fakery of course and if when I bought it there was a NOS that was the same in terms of feel etc then I would have bought the NOS - but glad there wasn't.

The other thing I like about the Relics is you tend not to worry about dinging them and focus on having a great time gigging it. The road worn is another thing though they are all done the same I think and that's a bit Naff, but the CS ones are individual and better.

cheers

I work in a Guitar Store and we have people coming in saying "Oh no, I don't like the whole relic idea" and we'll normally set them up with a load of NOSs and signature models, but we ALWAYS say "just give a relic a go and tell us what you think". 8/10 times if it's a serious buyer, they leave with a relic. They are phenomenal guitars and what fender do now with many of their models to make them easier to play (9.5" Radius, Medium Jumbo Frets) just emphasises that.

A 1962 Relic Strat can, by definition have modern appointments like a flatter radius and bigger frets - because it's not a REISSUE. They are just basing most of it on a '62. They do what the players are going to like!
