I have worked up a CS order and am awaiting a price quote.

I have asked for a neck profile as it is on the Eric Johnson Strats.

Yesterday I happen to be back in the shop where I spent some time goofing with the Eric Johnson a few months ago and was floored by how "different" the neck felt than I had remebered.

It was the same guitar that I had played in March of 2009.
The neck seemed much smaller and there seemed to not be any "V" feel at all, as I had remembered.

At the same time I tried out the newer Eric Johnson model with bound board and an older SRV. Nothing did it for me.

Now I am wondering if I should choose a Clapton or other profile that will give me what I remembered and loved in March - that large comfortable "favorite jeans" feel? I'm not interested in putting out thousands of dollars for a fine instrument and getting a neck that feels "close but not there".

So my question is:
Since I am a 2.5 hour drive from a store where I can to put my hands on a Clapton, as well as a number of other CS guitars, those of you that have tried both the Eric Johnson and the Clapton, what is your take on the difference in feel, size, comfort?

As a point of reference, I have recently gotten a Warmoth "Boat" shape neck for a project that I've been wanting to do for some time and that profile is pretty close - but it is missing any "V" bump. It is certainly a large and beefy neck and is almost there.

Am I not ready for a CS guitar? Am I having irrational second thoughts?

Thanks for any input.

I have addressed this elsewhere in th Forum. The Clapton has the sleekest V-neck of the lot. Jack Krause is considered the guru of that guitar. You need to have him build yours using as a reference the "2003 Triplets" which were "as built for the artist" guitars if you do not want something chunky.

It's too long a story to reitterate as to why, but that's likely the best place to begin. Remember that the Clapton neck is usually of some kind of figured maple with laminated maple board and a 9.5 radius .A 12 " radius on an Eric Johnson, with solid maple quartersawn wood and a different setback on the headstock.

If your interests are limited to a solid maple neck with 21 frets, then just the radius and neck profile are going to be the issue. Of course, your choice of fret wire comes into the discussion here as well.

Doc.

Thanks for the input.

I am actually looking for something rather chunky but with a rather high angle on the low E string end going into the "V" while retaining a slight shoulder and a softer angle towards the high E string side coming off of the "V".

I have begun playing around with a simple piece of pine to see how the various profiles feel. Once it's there, I am guessing the board can be sent to Fender to match the profile on the neck?
