Hey SparkyG,

I'm planning to to the exact same thing, swap the VN for Kinmans in an Eric Clapton CS Strat. I've listened to many samples on the Kinman website and on youtube, and the pickups (MK-II) sound really great. But how do they sound in combination with the midboost on a clean setting (midboost on 0)? Can they still produce that nice vintage clean sound? According to areyouexperienced.net, the midboost circuitry has an output of approx. 76k even when turned to 0.

Is there any way to bypass the active circuit and have only the passive pickups do the work? That would make the EC strat even more versatile (e.g. Deltatone)

The original Clapton design included a mini-toggle to turn the preamp on and off. This idea was ultimately discarded. Other commentaries do not laud these VN's going solo. The components were designed to function in unison nor do I think the concept of the guitar was to have that vintage "Stratty" tone, it was rather to provide the throat of a humbucker when set full.

I was interested in bypassing the preamp system because I'm planning to put Kinmans in there instead of the VNs which do sound good without active circuits which again would give the EC strat an even greater tonal range. I'm not sure though if that is possible because of the different pots required for active and passive circuits (50k and 250/500K).

If you are going to mod the guitar, suppose you ask Kinman what they would recommend for the circuit if you chose to add a minitoggle to cut the preamp out of the loop at will. There should be a best of all world mix which will give you what you seek. For starters, bear in mind that Clapton's guitars DO NOT have a TBX..rather a conventional tone control which is the way the Custom Shop and Masterbuilt versions are fitted. This, in and of itself, may further simplify your solution.

Just to be clear the Artist series and the Teambuilt Custom Shop Clapton Strats both have TBX's fitted. Only the Masterbuilt Claptons (and Erics) don;t have TBX.

Regarding the Kinman Traditionals I have in my Clapton, I really like the fit, but I prefer the sound and versatility I get using the Kinman woodstocks and his K9 harness in my CS 60's relic - consequently that's my main gigging guitar and I rarely play the Clapton.

cheers.

You know, the confusion on all of this started back about a year ago when we were examining the CS specs which state conventional tone control, and a member advised us that his new CS guitar indeed had a TBX. I thought we had ultimately been given to understand that the CS should not.

I think we should post Mike on this once and for all.

Go to the Eldred Forum. I've posted the question and we are still running through it. I'm anticipating a FINAL final...
