This is news to me! thanks to everyone for the info. I have JV 62 1st series, a Rory and a 1954 MB from 2004. I am currently building a hardtail strat with maple neck but I have not yet informed the wife........ How do I get a Holly Strat through the door when it comes out? All guitars are sunburst so perhaps she wont notice if I rotate them?

With your wife humming the tune to "That'll Be The Day", more than likely you'll have moved and changed your address by then. :?

Any news updates on this one? Still have not completed the hardtail yet.... still need a vintage style neck. The 54 Masterbuilt is however fantastic and I will not sell it. so the Holly will be a +1. Getting crowded here......

I've read this story many times that the "Fender company" restored Buddy's '58 Strat. The Fender company did not. I had the honor of doing that while I was heading up the Fender Museum. I had invited Fender to be involved, but the Marketing people at the time decided not to. I've known John Cruz for many years, I hired him into the Custom Shop. I find it very hard to believe that he took credit for something he knows I did.

As far as the pick falling out during the restoration, that part is somewhat true. When I removed the pickguard the old white Gibson pick was jammed underneath the pickguard as shown in the photo included in this reprint of the original Guitar Player story - http://www.buddyhollyonline.com/guitar.html

I know things tend to get confused over the years, so I just thought it was time to clear it up.

Hi john page ,and welcome to the forums. Thank you for setting the record straight .The conversation I had with JC was in context to new projects the CS might be working on . That is when the BH strat came up.He was telling the story and it was an assumption on my part he was present for the restoration. So your right ,you know John far better than I do. Ive only meet him a few times. It would be too bad if Fender did not make this guitar, I think it would be a winner.
It is nice to have Fender Associates participate in these forums to provide a more accurate perspective . thanks again

Hello John!

You're arrival herein is way long overdue. There's been a lot of water under the bridge that you likely would have been of great assistance wading through.

That guitar there has always interested me having owned a '58 with an 029xxx serial number, a neck date of 11/58.
(The story of that guitar having been told here too often, I'll skip it).

I recall the sunburst 'banding'on my guitar being far less distinct, darker and with more subtle bleed through, than the one in your hands in that famous photo. That more like the change Fender made in the 60's. I also thought my guitar had a soft-V neck as opposed to a C in terms of profile, not nut width.

If you go into the thread just below this one..."advice needed".....and find alainlafrance's URL to his collection you'll find therein, (pg 10) a guitar which the company built called "Buddy". That's the look of my old guitar when new. You will also find an excellent photo of a mint '58 on page 30 of the first edition of A.R. Duchossoir's book on the guitar. That is the finish I refer to, closer yet.

Any thoughts?

Doc

Come on Fender guys! Give us a little clue as to if and when the Holly Strat will be produced. I need to work on some advanced strategy (no pun intended) to get this past the wife. I could even be persuaded to sell the Rory to finance a Holly.

wouldn't a "50th Anniversary" '58 have come out in 2008? 2010 is just around the corner...

In the substance of the Forum discussions on the Holly estate you will find uncomplimentary references to the difficulty in negotiating with his widow. It is likely that it took significant time to reach terms acceptable to her.

Given that the Gilmour NOS came in around 4K, and the Relic around 5K, I would have hoped this clean guitar to come in a price reasonable, given the current increases. In that this is to be a 'Tribute' instrument, and given the source managing the artist's side of the negotiations, do not be particularly disappointed at a price beyond reason.

In time we shall know. The matter does not merit any further consideration until Fender 'blows the trumpets' in their 'greatest thing since sliced bread fashion', as only they know how.

Personally, I found the Gilmour Project, one of their better, if not best yet, which had so many chomping at the bit, was an elegant undertaking, and reflective of the artist himself. A reading of it, in Phil Taylor's book, will certainly illustrate why.

Doc

I completely agree, doc. I foresee the same range with JM and TBO

I personally wouldn't want a Holly strat, since he mainly played '57s and '58s. I'd just buy a late 80s or early 90s sunburst '57RI. close enough there to a NOS variation of a Holly. now I'd buy a relic "Tribute" version for sure! lol

Now our preferences for guitars certainly does reflect our vintages, doesn't it. Having owned and played a '58 for many years, and been around that guitar since it pretty much walked out of the store it was purchased in.

Your preference for the '57RI is interesting. That's the neck on the Gilmour, but was not the profile on my '58.

I can tell you that Alain's 'Buddy' would suit me just fine because it's nearly dimed my old guitar.

The guitar John Page restored is dated about 6 mos earlier than the one I owned. Thus far it is not clear if THAT is the guitar to be produced.

If I get another Strat, the house will not be mine to mortgage..... I know Maria Elena has historically not been easy to negotiate with, but surely it cant cost more than a Rory! I was considering a Kendrick 58, but will wait until the Buddy comes out and then see what the price is. Shame they could not make it 2009 which is 50 years since Buddy's death.
