Hello Everyone,

I already posted this in the Telecaster forum, but they suggested I post this here.

I am referring to a special limited edition run of 50 matched pairs of Stratocasters and Telecasters in their Custom Shop in 1993.

Image

The problem I have is with the "Custom Shop" logo on the neck of two Tele guitars from the same series. The problem is that these "Custom Shop" logos on the back of the neck are NOT the same logo! One shows the "USA" at the bottom of the logo and the other does not. Keep in mind that these two Tele's are from the exact same limited series run. I have photos of Tele #5 of 50 and Tele #33 of 50 both from 1993 and same limited edition.

Now keep in mind that both of these are 1993 Custom Shop Tele's with the exact same specs AND from the exact same series. So my dilemma is this, is one of these fake, molested or repaired? If so, which is real and how can I tell? If you look closely at these two logos, the one that does NOT include the "USA" does include the text "Fender" where the other does not. These two "Custom Shop" logos are completely different in many ways (including the font used for "of" and numbers) and I'm just trying to figure out which is correct. Would Fender's Custom Shop have and use two completely different "Custom Shop" logo stamps during a limited production run? It just doesn't make much sense to me and I'm trying to get to the bottom of this.

I realize and have seen that Fender will include the "USA" as part of the logo and sometimes without. However I find it strange that two guitars from the exact same series would have completely different logos placed on them. Both guitars include the Custom Shop certificate and both claim to be unmolested and untouched originals. In fact, both are from Fender collectors. How can I be sure and has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Thanks for helping if you can.

These are Teambuilt so depending on who finishes them , one can use the decal he has in stock which may slightly differ from another as well as the number which is added afterward.

I don't see any problem on the integrity of a guitar coming from that point.

Hi, these are beautiful Teles! They are from a Strat/Tele ltd edition set commissioned by Bill Carson. He was Fender sales rep at the time and he signed the backplates (rear side) of these Strats. I have been offered sets #01 and #07 in the mid 90s and had the chance to play these stunner.

Unfortunately, one of your Teles is not 100% original or not from 1993. The logo without "USA" has been introduced in late 1998, so probably the neck has been swapped or the original one might have been refinished and the newer logo has been applied.

Anyway, both necks are looking very sweet. It´s a pity that the matching Strats have been sold separately...

Hi Harald,

I rely on your knowledge and agree with you after a more in-depth investigation.
I owe you one...
Cheers
Alain

Hi Alain, I am sorry if this sounded too much like a wiseacre, this was not my intention...

But a t the end it´s just a logo. If the guitar plays and sounds great - fine!

Seems I´m getting a bit more relaxed the older I get...haha.

Cheers!

Nothing like that my friend

It happens to me to be too fast in my replies; I should investigate a little bit more before.

Thank you VERY much! I just accidentally stumbled on two of these Tele's and when I saw the difference in the Logo, I knew something was up, but I had no idea how to figure out which was the real or untouched Tele. I agree both Tele's are beautiful, but I really wasn't thinking about buying them on their beauty alone. I do want the real thing and one that is original.

I love Fender guitars mainly for their craftsmanship and original sound. I don't even play the guitar, but own 4 of them. The first one I purchased was back in 1973 when I was 15 which is a natural Strat. I still own this guitar today and it sits away in its case. I take it out every so often to keep it in tune and strum it just to hear that vintage tone. Years ago I took the volume and tone knobs off and put them in an air sealed bag to preserve them and put reissue knobs in their place.

I have never owned a Tele, but have always wanted one. This is when I stumbled on these two. I realize the '90 is probably not the era I should be looking at, but I did find these Tele's to be very beautiful. I want to purchase a Tele to add to my small collection. I'm just not sure what would be a good investment. I do want to find something special/limited without spending my life's savings. Any ideas on the years and version of Tele I should be looking at?

Thanks a million for all your help!

Well, it mostly depends on your virtual budget...
There are many Ltd Editions in quite a large bracket of investment...

Hi Alain,

I would like to keep it under (US)$3,000. I'm not sure if a Master Built, simple Custom Shop, or a limited edition Custom Shop is the way to go. The '52 RI Tele's seem to have hundreds of them floating around where the '51 seems to be fewer. Both have limited editions, but what's the point if everyone has a non-limited version? I personally hate the look of relics and just can't see me getting a Tele that was beat up with a bicycle chain and looks a million times worse than my original '73 Strat. I just don't understand these relics to be honest with you. I guess this appeals to the same people that buy worn out Levi's!

What I really want is a non-relic Tele and not necessarily a new one. I see some '82 '52 RI that seem to be collectible. I guess I want a limited version, but at the same time I don't want a million non-limited editions of the same version. Do you know what I mean? I want something special, but not so unique that it is a one off that only appeals to a limited number of people. I don't have huge hands and find the '51 a little hard for me to play. I have only held a couple of Tele's in my life so I'm not sure which is has the best feel for me. I can say that I love the feel of my '73 Strat.

Anyway, there are a large amount of inventory out there as you know. I guess I just have to continue with my research and hope I don't get screwed with a fake, repaired or heavily altered guitar.

Thanks!
