buddyhollyonline was a great online resource.
Its gone now.
A certain widow's lawyers preassured its creater into turning control and complete content over to her.
So he discontinued it.
A real shame.
It will be missed by many 50's music and gear enthusiaests.

I'm sympathetic to your strong opinion, however it is unlikely that you will find much support among artists and their heirs. Intellectual properties law is quite complex but has evolved as such to protect the interests of same from the unauthorized use of images and the like for gain. Trademark law is likewise part of that, and Fender strongly relies on same to protect the integrity of its mark and its products.

You'd be surprised at how even the most outwardly appearing antisocial, seemingly reactionary bands will defend their rights under those laws.

They are, in the end, all capitalist entrepreneurs, laughing all the way to the bank, with your money.

You're probably right, was just expressing my point of view from the observer and music enthusiast. I'd probably turn into a leech myself given the opportunity.

I'd like to think I wouldnt...

Yeah,I am sympathetic to heirs protecting the rights to the use of the images of a deceased icon.
their has been some real examples of poor taste and outright exploitation that has cheapened the property of these icons and the rightful heirs havent seen a dime from it.
In this instance it almost seems like the efforts to 'protect' Holly's image have been almost damaging in and of itself.
Lets face it is his legacy being served by there NOT being a signature Strat all these years?
Those of us that are cognizant of his influence on contemporary music are getting older and I doubt many in the younger generations are aware to any large degree.
The city of Lubbock was finally begining to acknowledge and celebrate his legacy with a museum and many musical events.
Something one would think would be mutually beneficial to the town
and Buddy's body of work and image as a property.
As it stands now there is such a bad vibe associated with Buddy because of this in some factions I doubt it will ever be the same.
They had to curtail them to the point of re-naming a street that had been named in his honor to avoid being virtually extorted for a ridiculous sum of money.
A cohesive greatest hits box retrospective was only until recently held up for decades for the same reason.
I mean if you want to see him recede into the mist of time forever I doubt she could do a better job.
Of course this is merely my opinion others may certainly disagree or have another take.

[quote="kline"] Would that it had been your priviledge to administer his estate otherwise. This discussion would not be taking place.

As far as a signature guitar...The George Fullerton, (such as the one recently acquired by one of our Forum members). or a copy of the CS guitar alainlafrance calls "Buddy" would likely fit the bill at a lower cost than a Tribute Series duplicate of the '58 Stratocaster of Holly's which the Custom Shop restored.

With either of those, you would certainly find comfort.

Doc

There has been no Buddy Holly Tribute Strat because the widow was so greedy that her requests were far beyond what Fender could agree on because of other contracts.

That's life and therefore the 'Buddy" '58 Strat is in every point a stunning recreation of an "anonymous" guitar.

Raf: Tell us about your guitar :?:

That guitar of alain's, at the top of this thread is a dead on '58 replica. Having owned the real deal I can vouch for it. The guitar on the Cricket's LP jacket is a two-tone sunburst. Having owned the record on release, (and played the grooves out of it, by the way), I can vouch for that too.

Hi Doc

Maybe the widow had her arm twisted to agree to a reasonable proposal from Fender and in accordance with the latter's commitments.

The cost to the end user will ultimately speak to the issue.

Personally, between my '89 Clapton, and this really beautifully executed Stratocaster in the Gilmour, I don't know how much more I need to stable for my needs.

You'll just have to continue doing all collecting for the rest of us.

Hez zzdoc, mine's nothing special (except to me). It's an '08 Am Std 3-tone sunburst. I took that pic fairly recently while changing strings. I have to admit that I don't know a thing about Buddy Holly's music (a little before my time) but have always understood that he was a great example of a true Strat player. When I saw the pic that alain posted of BH's git I thought it kinda looked like mine (except the pickups were a different color). I absolutely love mine by the way and am a dyed-in-the-wool Strat convert (from an LP).

Anyway, I probably was just subconsciously looking for a chance to post a pic of my baby. :P
