[quote="nikininja"]Note the detail of the sunburst fade. A definate reddening of the yellow as it fades to brown. A personal favourite detail of mine.

Niki: The gear you were admiring in the photos I sent you....you're looking at it's tribute edition. Shame I didn't know that guitar was being made available.

The date on the neck of my '58 Strat was 11-58. The serial number was an #029....The body finish was your 'Buddy' dimed. The guitar in the photo does not appear to have the kind of subtle shade blending which appeals to Niki and myself and which, by your own admission elsewhere, I know that you required on that order. The neck, to my memory, was a soft-V, not a C-neck as described in the restoration article. What is the neck profile on your guitar?

As well, the motivation for that guitar arriving in my world, via my band mate, was Buddy Holly.

Great topic! Not to change the subject, but for all the Buddy Holly fans out there I just picked up "Buddy Holly, Down the Line Rarities" CD. It is really good, and great to hear some of the raw classics, as well as some unreleased stuff.
Also worth a look is the Paul McCartney tribute, The Real Buddy Holly Story.

Oh yeah, one more, Denny Laine with Paul McCartney on Holly Days is a great listen as well:)

After seeing that guitar im only starting to understand the absolute travesty you suffered at the hands of fender. Who would of known though how desirability of such all original items would have skyrocketed to the unprecedented levels it enjoys today. Still i think you'd have a good case if you reported fender to the court of human rights.

Your sympathies are well received. My mates and I enjoyed a reunion this past Saturday. The chap who originally owned that Strat among them. We were looking at an enlarged photo of three of us snapped with me holding that guitar. We had fond memories of the good times we shared and the music we both made with it.

The only wrinkle about that guitar was that the string spacing tended to force the 6th string off the fingerboard on the high frets. That has been corrected long since, but I wonder if Alain's "Buddy" was built with that flaw. If so, it is truly a correct representation.

There's no recourse to Fender today with respect to what theirpredecessor did. Nor could we have ever anticipated the vintage market to become what it did. Interestingly enough, I have people in the business telling me that the time has passed. I would expect that, other than the quality of the gear exemplified by Alains collection, the value of a genuine relic '58 Stratocaster (looking like it was dumped from the saddle and ridden over by a herd of wild horses) may be in its decline. I certainly would look forward to Alains input on this.

I'll be on a 7:30 p.m. flight back to NYC this evening. Will catch up during the ensuing days.

Hi Doc,

I'll revert to your message tomorrow as it's quite late now in France.
See you
Alain

I forsaw vintage prices going into decline a while back. It stands to reason that such instruments are not of limitless supply. Collecters aren't the kind of people to sell. So therefore over time the market must start to decline. As it does so will prices. Enjoy a safe flight Doc.

Buddy Holly was only 22 when he died.

I have a guitar that looks Exactly the same as his its a
1957 Stratocaster with a sunburst design.

He is the one that actually got me into playing guitars.

Now I get paid to play his songs.

Have a look at the thread below concerning the George Fullerton and our comments therein.
