Hi guys, can I get some opinions on this Tele? I don't really know a thing about them. I'm going to go see it/play it tomorrow but I'd like some opinions from the experts before I do and if it's worth the price...and most importantly, if I'd be getting hosed if I bought it.

The guy is asking $2,200 and I've talked him down to $1,800. I live in Canada and I'm sure most of you guys live in the U.S. So, to give you an idea of Tele prices up here (because of the recent price hike up here and lousy exchange rate) a new American Standard lists for $1,200 and a new '52VR Tele lists for $1,700. Up from $999 & $1,400 a few months ago.

The description goes...

Fender Custom Shop Telecaster built in August 2000, to 1954 'transition' specs. White single ply pickguard (changed from black in mid '54) and the serial number on the bridge plate (moved to neck plate in mid '54). The neck is flamed maple with a "soft-v" profile tapering to a slim C. The radius is 7.25" with vintage frets and negligible fret wear. Low serial number (400xx!) and condition is near mint with no dings or scratches and not a trace of buckle rash. Includes the G&G tweed case, ashtray bridge over, and a Levis strap with straplocks attached (original buttons are gone) but no case candy. This guitar has hardly been played because I prefer shorter scales with flatter fretboards and bigger frets.

With no COA i'd be very careful.

Now i never thought i'd find myself admitting this next bit but.
The few CS guitars i have played had a definite feeling to them that i haven't found on standard models. So it may be a idea to play a good few american standards before going to try this one out.
Also on mine atleast there is a good deal of serial numbering going on. The neck and body serial numbers (found under the scratchplate and on the heel of the neck) match the hangtags serial number. My american vintage hotrod has no such refinements despite being near the same price. I realize there is no hang tag but without any certification i'd want to see those numbers on the neck match the bodies numbering stamp. Without such proof even though it may not be common practice on that guitar, i'd walk away. Unless of course you are super happy with the way the guitar feels and would gladly spend such money on the instrument even if it was made in outer mongolia. Also i'd get the serial number off the neckplate (it wont match the neck or body serial numbers and will more than likely begin with C) and enquire at fender's customer relations department to see if it matches the guitar in question. You could wait awhile for a reply from them though.
