Hi.

On April 14, 1994 I purchased a Custom shop Set Neck Stratocaster.
It is Honduras Mahogony with an (sweet) ebony fretboard.
I don't know what the neck is made from.. Maybe Mahogany.
It is the guitar at left in the following image:
Image
The body and neck back is painted black so it is hard to see the woods below. (Sadly as I am sure they are great)

I think some of you may agree it's pretty stunning. I have never seen another (of this model) with the same flame maple top and sunburst color. I have seen a few in the amber color but they had quilt tops. In fact when I bought this one they also had one of the amber quilt tops and when compared side by side this one is the nicer of the two (no offense to those who may own quilts IMO). Quilt tops just don't thrill me. Flame or plain tops are my preference. And the top on this guitar is really something else.

I am here for a couple of reasons.

1. I wanted to date the manufacture of this guitar but had no luck on datemyguitar which someone on this forum pointed out might be the place to start. If anyone is interested in helping my serial number is CN201231.
I also wanted to get an idea of the rarity of this guitar. Were thousands of these made? If not how many?

2. I never received a certificate of authenticity from Fender or from the dealer on this guitar. I called Fender once years back and they said sorry if I didn't get one with the guitar than they would not supply one for me now. That is a real disappointment. I paid big bucks for this thing, and I have seen many lesser guitars with C of A's and I am really not happy that I don't have one. The dealer said they lost it. I didn't know I should have received one as I was a kid back then. It was only later that one of my friends asked me if I got one and when I said no he said that without the C of A the value of the guitar would be decreased substantially.

3. My guitar is virtually unplayed and completely pristine. Only some slight swirling on the back or light finish scratches if you really look closely. It is almost musem quality. Theres a reason it is almost unplayed. The back of the neck is finished with I guess what you would call a gloss finish. So if your hands are not completely dry they stick and I cannot easily slide from one position to another. A friend of mine told me to put baby powder on my hand but I don't want baby powder all over this guitar. I actually thought about sanding down the back of the neck but I am sure I would turn a beautiful instrument into junk. I have zero ability when it comes to that stuff. I am surprised Fender would make a top quality Custom Shop guitar that would not play well. Is there something I am missing?

Anyway I have more to say but I will let it go for now.
This is my first post on this forum even though I am a huge Fender fan.
I hope to get a certificate of authenticity from Fender and that is my real purpose for coming here today. I am hoping people from Fender read this forum but I don't know.

Welcome to this Forum

If you contact the Fender Consumer Dept, they'll be happy to date your guitar.
If you are the original Buyer of this new guitar, you can ask your original Dealer to contact Fender to get a COA and they will send him a replacement one but with the present date
That's routine.
Several models have high gloss finish even on the neck and that's part of their beauty even if playing is different from a satin finish. You should have realized that when buying it.

If you sand the neck, your guitar will lose much more than because of a missing COA

I just wanted to say thanks to alainlafrance for that advice.
I went ahead and tried with the original store again and it seems they contacted Fender and I will be getting that C of O. I remember 15 years ago the store wouldn't even help me but I guess they are a bit better now. Thanks again.

And just so you guys know... For those of you who are buying your first Custom Shop guitar... I would never sell mine. I have gone through dozens of guitars and amps but they're gonna bury me with my Custom Shop.

Around 2002/2003 Fender had a "Custom Artist Series" set neck Ritchie Blackmore model ...

Wanted to say thanks again for all those who replied to this thread.
Since my original post i have proceeded to forward images of teh guita, serial numbers, and bill of sale over to Sam Ash, which is the store where I originally picked this guitar up.

They are charging $50.00 for a replacement on the Certificate of Authenticity, but they are doing it. So I am really happy about that.

I have a lot of guitars. The Banana Yellow Strat in the top image is a 40th Anniversary American Standard. Pristine - nearly unplayed condition. Pickups are a bit noisy but the neck is smooth like silk.

The Custom Shop Set neck is a guitar I am now rediscovering. Again the Ebony Fretboard makes a big difference in look, feel, playability compared to all other fretboards I have tried over the years. But again like I said the gloss finish on the back of the neck somewhat inhibits playability.

The neck itself feels like a baseball bat. Yet I know that sounds negative however it is not. It is a fat resonant neck that when you wrap your hand around it - you kind of feel like this blissful feeling of choking someone.. (That is just a figure of speech - I am a really peaceful guy).

Lately I am running a Boss DD6 Digital Delay splitting my signal from the Set Neck into both the Orange AD30TC and the Blues JR. This gives me a lush stero separation with a wide panning sweeping delay. A little bit of crunch from the OCD and a buffer through the Starship delay makes the sounds run from Floyd to The Doors. A bit more boost and I nail the Zeppelin Page sound completely, and hit a good Santana tone now and then as well.

Its funny because when you compare the quality of the stuff I am playing through to what Jimmy page played through back when he was starting out, my stuff beats his. That is really an amazing point about the advance of technology, quiet signal to noise ratios, 24 bit signal processing and line level boltage stability.

If you took this rig back in time and set up on a Mayan pyramid, play some Boston open D and G chords ... They would make you the king and would start praying to you.

I am lucky if I can get a bar gig now and then!

Peace Out.Image
