First: Thanks to Alain for the radius guide. The asuumption here is, that based on Duchossior's statement as to 8.5(and I hold out the possiblity of a 'typo'), I need to measure the guitar neck directly. When I'm finished I'll describe the method and the findings.

i think the quote is also in wheeler's book, though...so if they are typos - well, suspiciously coincidental.

The closest I can roughly estimate with respect to the geometry of this neck is a radius of 10 inches. Therefore, I expect that the neck on my guitar is 9.5, not 8.5

Surprising result - i would have thought an early one would definitely come at 8.5...maybe by 'early' they meant really really early model.

at any rate - thanks for taking the time doc!

Perhaps the guitars with the active/passive switches. The narrative did say that there were two neck types he chose. The forumulas used to find the radius of a circle knowing both the chord and the arc it transects requires a far more accurate determination of the latter than can be discerned from a measurement of these necks.

HUH?? Doc , you are talking way over this Louisiana boys head! :? It must be nice to be intelligent! 8)[/quote]

Take a quarter and draw a circle from it. Take a ruler and draw a line through the circle about 1/4" below the edge of the circle. That line, called a chord, cuts through both sides of the circle but it not a diameter which is essential a chord that cuts the circle in half equally. The arc that was created above the line you drew represents, in principle, the curvature of the fret board which is part of the circumference of a circle. The flatter the curvature (arc) the larger the circle must be, hence the larger the radius.

If you drop a perpendiular line from the edge of the circle to the chord at its midpoint, you now have all the components necessary to calculate the radius of the circle if you know the height of the perpendicular, the length of the chord between the two points it cuts the circle, and the length of the arc.

On the guitar you have to estimate the shape of th arc because, like a rainbow, it emerges from one side of the body, follows across the neck to the other side and disappears into the body. The distance between the imaginary points of appearance and disappearance is the length of the chord that is transection the circle whose radius is the radius of the neck.

So I measured the height of the fretboard from the body at the midpoint of the width of the board. I estimated the shape the arc and took its measurement, and estimated where the arc would have emerged from ane reentered the body. Plugged in the numbers and got 10.

I'm going to repeat this again using a different measurement technique this weekend and let you know what I find.

P.S. To aid in your further confusion I have no doubt that one of us will find and post the trigonometric diagrams for this in due course. 8)
