Just that the electronics and pickups are not too special as you can get the same thing from the American series.

You'll certainly notice the electronics are not the same. The regular production EC Standards and teambuilt EC Customs sport the TBX circuit and the artist's signature in the head, with the latter having the signature placed in the back. The Masterbuilts are a slightly different beast: a stock 250K tone pot in place of the TBX and the absence of any signature in the headstock. Both guitars feature the MDX booster pot for overdrive and distortion.

Among other notable changes Eric did in his personal stage axes over the years is the inclusion of staggered tuners and the switch to D'Addario EXL110 Regular Lights.

Hi anyone who is interested in Buying/ordering a John Cruz guitar. I just bought a NEW John Cruz 1960 strat and it came unplayable. You/I would think for $6400.00 that this guitar would be race ready, it is not. Now I have been talking to a Paul at Fender, and I have to now take guitar cross town and jump through more hoops to get this resolved. meanwhile after spending $6400 on a John Cruz guitar I still have no guitar. The issue is that the frets ends were rounded off too much and the High and low E falls off the ends. (most severly the high E) It is at Master Luthier, (Rauen guitars) right now, look him up in milwaukee, he was shocked that this is what I got for my money. He thought I bought it second hand and some hack did this. He said he has seen this before and he wont even deal with Fender, "It's too much hassle, and not worth it". So much for finally being able to buy a awsome guitar and have it a enjoyable experience. I'm not even sure if John Cruz made this guitar. (They maybe just slaped his name on it). anyway this sucks Buyer beware. I will keep you posted on this, here and other sites. Blessings

Did you not try this guitar out at the music store, before you left? I wish I could afford a Masterbuilt Fender guitar and John Cruz is a wonderful and qualified craftsman at Fender. Somehow I don't think all the facts have been gathered about this complaint regarding this guitar and its issues. The problem I think would start at the music store where you ordered the guitar and your sales guy should be the one making contact with Fender, since you had to go through a Custom Shop dealer, to have the order put through. I don't think this is the right place to air your disgruntle with Fender. I have never had a problem with any Fender Custom Shop guitar I have bought and I will continue to be a loyal Fender customer and I am sure there are others on this forum that will agree with me. I wish you luck on resolving your issues with your guitar and I hope it comes out with a positive result. :D

I have a potential plan which entails stripping the body to have it refinished. So with just that info to go on please start lobbing the grenades so I can think on it

I am surprised to hear this, especially as JC has been doing it for so long! Cruz signs his guitars all over- neck pocket, base of neck, a piece of masking tape in the control cavity, and you will see his neatly entwined pickup wire; it's a work of art under the hood. If it is a relic you will see his distinctive ageing around all the pole pieces and the tuner posts- he's been doing that for a few years now. If the ageing around the high e pole pieces has worn away- that guitar has been played a lot and seen some sweat. His master builder decal will contain a serial number on the back of the headstock only. I recently bought a '63 JC and the fret work was immaculate- I remember thinking I'd never seen anything like that on a new guitar. I'm sure he would be mortified to hear of this. I hope you've not been swindled in some way. Shops that are unlicensed dealers of Fender have been known to dress the frets of relics to sell them as new.

I've seen a few places selling albeit secondhand 'Cruz Masterbuilt' guitars, which are in fact regular custom shop guitars with 'JC' stamped in the neck pocket. This was from when he was the quality control guy- he didn't build those guitars. Masterbuilt guitars have no stamps on the body or neck saying 'relic' etc., they are only signed and dated by hand. I've also seen guitars with his decal on the back of the headstock, but with no serial number at the bottom; these are also dubious and I wouldn't go near them.

I hope the matter gets resolved. I too am puzzled why this was not dealt with through the dealer you bought from? Fender asks customers to do it this way. If you wanted to keep the body as you really liked it, they would ship you a new neck via the dealer.

Did you take photos of the guitar? Post them if you did.

Ps Fender never read these boards anymore.
