The guitar he used at Hyde Park 1996 is a Mercedes Blue/Green colour - not Pewter. He didn't use Pewter strats after 1990! His 'main' Pewter strat became black in summer 1990, and the second one (birdseye neck) was not used.

The Pewter Birdseye neck went later for slide playing. Eric used that guitar for the last time during the Crossroads Charity shows in 1998. If you check the footage with Sheryl Crow singing "A Difficult Kind", you'll see Clapton playing the Stevens-built "birdseye" pewter strat.

The guitar you're talking about is currently in use for the 2010 tours along with the Daphne Blue strat. Although many EC fans called the grey finish "Grigio Silverstone" or "Grigio Grey", Eric opted for the more conventional term "EC Grey".

I agree, EC Grey is a darker variant of Pewter.

doc,

that guitar spec sounds exceptional - it is too bad they were not able to fully execute it for whatever reasons....but it seems you are quite happy with the early production run clapton, and now DG, that you have!

'vintage nitro' is another finish different than nitro?

wildwood is exactly where i came across the EC thin skins, and thus my question on what people thought of them on the Clapton. I specifically disliked the Hwy1 because of the 'dull' finish i saw on them so am initially pretty hesitant about that finish on my potential Clapton....but just thought i would solicit input from everyone here that is more knowledgable.

On another topic, the flame neck Claptons look ridiculously good to me from that site!

I posted a thread recently of my new CS Clapton Thinskin. Oddly, it is indeed in midnight blue. I LOVE it. The finish, just as point of reference, isn't dull at all. I would say it's easily the prettiest guitar I own and I really like the feel of nitro on the neck. (It does get just the slightest bit tacky when my hands start to really sweat, but I even kind of like that. I'm also finding the finish has already thinned a bit in specific areas of the neck that I play from a lot.)

If you're thinking about it, I'd say go for it. They're wicked hard to photograph, but the color is breathtaking.

Not the first time Eric has chosen a favorite auto paint for a guitar finish, ie.g.. Ferarri Red, Mercedes Blue. I wonder if either a trademark/copyright issue was restricting FMIC's use of Grigio Silverstone by name for the guitar? [quote]. A.R.Duchossoir notes in his book that 'anthracite' was the first choice of name for what ultimately came to be known as 'pewter'. No further mention of why, but anthracite coal is pretty near black in color , not even charcoal gray, an that might have been the reason.
