Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference (or point me to some pics where you can actually distinguish colors) between the offered midnight and mercedes blue.

I am assuming that mercedes is lighter in shade? I have had a really hard time finding any pics that definitively show the difference and none of the shops around me have either.

Is the strat that is used on the Hyde Park concert DVD, by chance, one of these colors?

thanks

You can check www.davesguitars.com, they have pictures of both of them, or possibly www.musiciansfriend.com.
The guitar he plays at the Hyde Park concert I believe is Pewter which is a kind of grey shade.
Hope it helps,
M.

are you pretty sure about that hyde park one? In looking at the dvd it looked a little more blueish...and i thought perhaps it was very close to the mercedes blue - if they even had that color back then....but it looked more blue to me than grey?

I don't think it's blue because that's 90's concert and that color was not even available in those days, whereas pewter was. I'm pretty sure it was pewter. What I'm completely sure it's not, is mercedes blue.

haha - well, thanks...at least i can definitively rule out it being mercedes blue (i had thought this was a newer color0. In all the pictures of pewter online it looks much lighter than the Hyde Park guitar, thus my question.

thanks a lot for the responses though...if i do decide to go the CS Clapton route, its going to be touch call between the mercedes and midnight blue.

The guitar he used at Hyde Park 1996 is a Mercedes Blue/Green colour - not Pewter. He didn't use Pewter strats after 1990! His 'main' Pewter strat became black in summer 1990, and the second one (birdseye neck) was not used.

He did use a Pewter-ish strat at Hyde Park 2008 - it's a Ferrari colour called Grigio Silverstone. Very similar to Pewter but not Pewter :)

Maybe alain knows if the CS will do that color at this time if it is requested.

I tried to get a quote for a CS built EC in 'his latest colour' - this was back in 2006 when it first appeared, before we knew exactly what colour it was. Todd Krause (who built 3 of these for E) said "no", because they'd have to get permission from Ferrari and also he didn't want copies turning up on Ebay, he wanted Eric to enjoy them for a while first :) That was in an email I got back from a very senior contact friend at Fender UK.

I had a similar situation with respect to the so called 'as built for' guitars about 18 mos ago, but alain said it was a 'crock' to paraphrase him. At least we have their rationale, but I would have liked to have had that "built to spec guitar"that he shares one of three with another member of this forum. You may have seen the thread on this recently.

Alas, such is price of fame and an adoring audience :cry: :cry: :cry:

For my money, when an instrument is offered as a signature guitar, and represented as that which the artist plays, that's what we should be getting and not learn via other sources that the stage guitar has certain 'tweaks'.

We did very well with the Gilmour and it is to David's credit. He has earned great respect from those of us who invested in these instruments, and should as well from those who did not.

Yep I agree.

Eric's never really used the 'sig series' as we get them. Sure some of them had the EC sig on the neck, but they weren't the same spec we get. For instance, a lot of them had neck profiles we don't get. Many of them had superglue finishes which NONE of us get. I tried to get a superglue finished neck and they said No way, way too toxic. But Mike Stevens (and many others) used to do it for EC... that's why all his older 90's strats showed such high amounts of fingerboard wear.
And his guitar bodies are finished differently (look at the wear they suffer - no way they're poly).

Someone I know bought one of EC's own original Midnight Blue strats and it had the most severe hard-V neck profile - looked like a Toblerone it was so triangle! We don't get that...

[quote="LeftyElliot"]Yep I agree.

Scroll down to 10/31/08 and find me as a last reply to that post to aid your search. Read the thread in its entirety if you have not yet done so.

There's a photo there you will find most interesting, as well as the details of the narratives. :wink:

[quote="LeftyElliot"]Interesting thread :)

Nice pics.

If you look closely at the rout of the control cavity, you'll see the small shoulder which does not exist in the vintage '57 guitars. That rout was modified to permit the 11 hole pickguard which was developed, even though the Clapton carries 8. Economies of scale. :wink:

When we pool our collective knowledge bases, you'd be amazed at what we teach each other. There are many resources out there which are drawn on for our contributions. The collective whole is a great learning experience and makes for great comaraderie in a mutual interest. :wink:

Well, I'm outta here for awhile. Catch ya later. Been great :!:
