Backstory: I placed an order for a 3-tone sunburst John Mayer Strat at a mom and pops store that has taken great care of me as opposed to going to GC.

All colors are out of stock and coming off the line end of october and december

I was wondering, and hoping, maybe I could get mine in Shell Pink or Blizzard Pearl (willing to pay more) since they weren't made yet....

but apparently Terry, the owner has tried this before and they wont make ANY modifications to an Artist Model, whats listed is what you get.

:unamused:

Is this true?

How would you go about getting the best color change on this? I'm wary of buying a finished or unfinished body for wood quality and the potential fitment issues.

Any mod ,colour or whatever, to a CS catalog's instrument turns it into a one off =>masterbuilt with the financial consequences.

Yep!! As you've indicated elsewhere....they've some costly little tweaks. As you've well demonstrated by your collection, the juice has to be worth the squeeze

Doc

Indeed I ordered only several one-offs, most Masterbuilt were bought 'as such".

thanks for replying to my thread. alain, I've been looking at your collection....holy $@!&... you have two of my fav fenders, the monterey and number one...and i saw your comment about Lenny on another thread, and believe you are mistaken. Guitar Center purchased the ORIGINAL Lenny from SRVs estate for several hundred thousand dollars, then they had Fender do all of the replicas without any oversight really. So its not GC created, just wouldn't have happened without their generosity, and as a result, you probably wont find Lenny anywhere other than a Guitar Center. I have played Lenny at a Guitar Center, it is the most amazing guitar I have had the privelage of playing.

I still don't feel like my question has been answered, I understand the concept of masterbuilt guitars. But...why is fender refusing to do any mods to an Artist Series guitar. Is Terry mistaken? Can I get a masterbuilt JM signature with shell pink finish and pay more?

Hi Ruh-Roh,

The Lenny was a flop and GC had to pull them back out of the market because of the very poor reaction of the potential buyers.
Nothing to compare with the #1.It was the one too many.
Generosity linked to GC's name, something wrong somewhere my friend...
Artists decide with a big influence from the CS how their guitar will be produced.
EC refused to have his name linked to a lefty.
It says it all.

Alain, everything you have said in this thread I believe is absolutely true! Some posters don't know your background!! If they stick around long enough they will learn a thing or two!

ah, so John Mayer is just a dick. :( I havent played number 1, or heard a replica (of COURSE I listen to the original on SRV records) , so to hear that it blows Lenny out of the water really speaks something to me. The Monterey I haven't played, but have heard in person several times...including John Mayer concerts, and as Hendrix is someone who has always fascinated me, to see two forms of his artistry on ONE thing makes me REALLY jealous of you and 249 other people, if thats how many were produced.

If you ever decide to sell it, which I don't imagine will happen, give me a call haha.

So, how would you go aboust changing the color of this guitar without sacrificing tone or quality appearance. Paint over it?

and I do see your point on the GC and generosity thing. Keep in mind I can walk out of one of their stores TODAY with a Mayer guitar at the same price I am paying at Terry's to get it a month or two later. Just so no-one thinks I'm a corporate suck-up...

Lenny may have been a flop, but playing it was a privilege, and the story behind it is very heartwarming I'm sure you know. I love guitars with stories, as i mentioned a little earlier.

I've found that the best way to make tweeks to artist models are to do them yourself. I, like you, really wanted some things that the Mayer strat offered. Mostly the pickups and color which are exclusive to that strat, but I also wanted something "my own", and reverse headstocks happen to be my thing.

And voila,

Image

I've got a limited edition Cyprus Mica John Mayer strat, with a AAA grade birdseye maple reverse headstock neck, that plays like a charm, minus the Custom Shop price tag.

Basically you're going to have to pay the Custom Shop what you would for a one-off, ask for Mayer Strat specs, and then just get a different finish. I faired better doing it myself.

Some might call me crazy for tainting a sig model strat, but hey, I love the way my guitar is and you should have yours just the way you want it to be.
