Post subject: David Gilmour Relic Strat problems
Posted: Fri Sep 26, 2008 6:40 pm
 I put in my order for the Gilmour relic strat the first week of august. I was lead to believe that I would be receiving it on the release date of September 22nd. After a week of calling every day to see where my $5000 guitar was, I was then told I wouldn't be getting it until the first or second week of December. DECEMBER!!!!!
He told me they only had 30 or 40 made as of September 22nd and they were releasing them as they were built and mine wasn't even built yet. I was one of the first 500 to get one so I could get the autographed version of "The Black Strat" by Gilmour's tech Phil Taylor.
I think it was very irresponsible of Fender to procrastinate like this. People are paying over five THOUSAND dollars for this guitar. They might not have known that there was going to be as much of a demand as there was but to only have 30 or 40 build as of the release date is just bad business......
Am I justified in feeling so pissed off? Please leave feedback/comments.....

A customer wants to be told the truth, so being mislead is not maddening.

How much money have you put down in advance?

It was paid in full on August 1st. A total of over $5200 with tax and all. I appreciate them being honest with me but my problem is that they should have had at least the first 500 completed. Minimum. They only had 30 or 40 done on the release date. That makes no sense at all... The planning for the release of this guitar was horrible. I realize it takes a long time to make these guitars and it should... they should have started the builds months and months ago.

You should call and tell them to hurry the F up. I mean, it's only 5000 bucks. Quality shouldn't be an issue-just punctuality.

I'll gladly wait for mine until they are comfortably finished. I've never spent this much on any 1 peice of music equipment, so I want it to be perfect.

It's gonna be great!

Of course, I meant "being mislead IS maddening."

Wow, you had to come up with the whole ticket! If you asked for half of it back until the guitar showed up, how would they respond?

It's been my experience too Frank, especially after spending four days with the Dali Lama. He made everything crystal clear, you get back what you put out. And as Gratz already said, it comes back tenfold.

"Things are seldom what they seem, skim milk masquerades as cream".

Those of us who know this company expect 'nothing', therefore we are never disappointed.

If it helps know that, when you place an order for a Custom Shop guitar to be built, you pay the cost up front, sit back and begin to live the rest of your life. On one fine day, waaaaaay into the future, your dealer calls and tells you "the guitar is in". In great anticipation you arrive to find that the wrong neck profile has been installed, thus, the guitar goes back to California with a "rush" on it. Six months later, it is finished, CLOSE, but no cigar, but close enough to be a keeper. Total time elapsed between order date and final finish......more than 18 months.

I would bet, by the traffic on this forum nearly 12 months now, that Fender is swamped with orders and can't exactly decide who in the pipeline is going to get preference. Look at Wildwood, for example, and the number of guitars they have in process. They are not the only high end shop on the Fender customer list.

We wish you the best, and hope you get your book. If not, enjoy the guitar, and go out and buy the book. I've ordered two (books). I'm tired of waiting for guitars.
