Be advised that, powered this way, you have strictly a lead guitar. You cannot "roll off the tone controls" for rhythm to yield that full bottom. You get a 12DB boost circuit and an " tone expander" but if you need the capability for traditional rhythm 'comping', you'll need a second guitar.

I've played EMG SV's in my Strat every day for over 8 years, and this is not true. Powered pickups do not make it impossible to reduce volume or drive with the volume control, and using them does not result in a "lead only" guitar (whatever that might be... something like a "lead only" piano, I guess).

Also, there is plenty of room for the battery in the standard control cavity, no extra routing or interference with the trem springs required. Mine is held in place along side the tone controls in a stock cheap-o Stew-Mac battery clip.

To Whom It May Concern in the Forum:

The specs for the DG-20 can be found on the EMG website. A very favorable review of this equipment was published in Guitar Player Magazine several years ago. I installed it in a'97 American Standard Stratocaster not long after I purchased the guitar new. With the natural finish and rosewood neck, the MOTO pickguard and cream colored pup covers and control knobs the look was terrific. I played the guitar in that configuration for several years until I became satisfied that I wanted a 'throatier' voice so I moved on to the Clapton.

For my purposes in the Stratocaster, I use the same stopped trem setup found in the Clapton. With the DG-20 I found it more convenient to remove the center spring from the trem block, run the battery wires back through was what then a 'swiimming pool' body rout, and set the 9V battery against the back wall of the trem routing between the springs. I cannot vouch for how this arrangement will work for a floating bridge. The system will certainly function well with four springs, and a battery clip attached to the back wall of the rout might offer the battery enhanced retention.

Guitars without the 'swimming pool' routing have more wood thus making it possible to notch the lower wall of the trem rout for a battery in the same fashion as the Clapton. For those of you who have never seen this adaptation, perhaps someone out there can supply us a photo for your edification.

If your personal choice is to elect to raise the pickguard when replacing the battery, so be it. I would find it less convenient to do so during a gig.

I stand by my impressions of the DG-20 electronics. It provides an excellent lead voicing for music Gilmore followers enjoy playing. However, you cannot get a solid rhythm guitar feel from this setup. It assuredly a lead instrument and will add variety to one's stable of instruments.

If it be just one, then you have configured it as such for the obvious reasons.

If the aforementioned has rendered you comfortably numb, then my purpose has been served.

Doc.

According to the Blog on Gilmour's website DG played a prototype of his Signature Strat at Codogan Hall, London last weekend when he played on Ron Geesin's presentation of Atom Heart Mother...

In this case, patience will be a virture and.....perhaps....a well stocked

I'm sure it will be expensive so I got fed up waiting and worked on my Squier Strat. I changed the neck, painted the pickguard, shotened the whammy bar (not in this pic) and voila...

It's close enough, plays like a dream and I'm extremely happy with it...

You should see the back :-)

They are all transfers so could be easily peeled off but I quite like them especially as I've spent a few evenings with Mr. Daniels in the past...

If I get the urge to peel them off and make this a true copy of Gilmour's Black Strat I may just do that...

Heads up...

Gilmour played a prototype of his Custom Shop Black Strat at Ron Geesin's recent presentation of Atom Heart Mother and afterwards when asked what he thought of the prototype he said "Pretty nice, actually."

A good sign for the future....

Well.... here it is. It's being released in September with a load of goodies in the case. The price hasn't been set yet though...

Cosmetically speaking, once one gets around all that 'sour mash', you've done a rather fine repro. As I have said elsewhere, there's a great deal of talent about. In fact, from an artistic perspective, yours is damn creative and preferable.

Now go ahead and install the guts of an EMG DG-20 on that pickguard and you'll have both the black and the red guitars!

Doc

ZZ...

Thank you for the comments. In fact I feel much more attached to my Squier because I have a history with it, where it came from, how I got the neck, shortening the whammy bar in my garage etc etc.

I probably won't purchase the new DG Strat because of those reasons. I would be buying a copy of a guitar the DG has an attachment with which I don't... maybe I could write a book about mine as well!

I've just won some Gotoh tuners for my Black Strat so they will be added very soon...

Is there any information as to where the DG sig Strat will be officially released? I know it's released on the 22nd of this month, just wondering if Fender are going to make a big deal over it. Or will it be a fairly low key affair? I was in my guitar store yesterday getting a few new pedals, they don't seem to know much about it, any inside information guys?
