I'm sorry if this is the thousandth time this topic has come up.

George Harrison's "Let It Be"/Concert on the Roof Tele is a beautiful guitar. Of course I have interest in getting a replica of it! I was just wondering if anyone knew any useful information on this guitar. Like, which one of Fender's Vintage 50s or 60s models would match it as closely as possible? Or, if the Black Rosewood finish is or has a close resemblence to the finish on the original. And, if any elbow greese will come into play  .

The original, which auctioned off for somewhere between $250,000 & $300,000:

Was George's rosewood tele a one-off from the Fender factory?

Had they made any before the one that George got?

Of course, there are recently made Rosewood Teles around if you want to buy one ... both US Custom Shop and Japanese reissues, I believe.

Check wildwoodguitars.com

Ahh, yeah, that's where I saw them, not at Wildwood (as I mentioned above). I read an interesting article about George's at the Auction site. It was custom made for him by Fender (a prototype for a possible new model it said). George gave it to Delaney (of Delaney and Bonnie) who sold it at through the auction.

Dave's Guitar Shop has a dozen of them! Elderly Music has one too.

I'd consider getting a Japanese one.

Masterbuilt Custom Shop USA rosewood teles are fantastic guitars with a very specific sound (silky but well defined)
I prefer the satin finish but it's JMHO.

Hi Be-rad
I'm collecting guitar for a while and gathered them since long ago.
I don't play all of them regularly but I do play all of them at least a few times a year.
I'm following The Shadows since the early '60s and I try to emulate their early sound.
I'm lucky enough to own a TVS3 echo chamber made by an Australian company (nothing compares with it)
Yes I know quite well what's going on with Hank as I'm Co-Manager of the ShadowsMusic Club Perth site.
Cheers
Alain

As far as I know, George Harrison's rosewood Tele was made by Philip Kubici, not fender!!

I believe it counts as being made by Fender as Philip was an employee there. At least that's how I read it:

My understanding is that the Rosewood Telecaster used by Goerge Harrison was a prototype, made in 1968. In 1969 through to 1972, Rosewood Telecasters were made in very lmited numbers as a production model. The production models started out very similar to George's guitar, but fairly soon (say mid 1969) they evolved slightly in design, the major change being the utilisation of a skunk strip on the neck, which the earlier versions did not have.

I have a 1969 Rosewood now and it looks like this:

As far as I know, the Fender Custom shop limited release Rosewood tele, which was made during 2007 was a faithful replica of the original George Harrison Rosewood Tele. This tele had two distinctive features as I understand it: A solid (non-skunk stripe) rosewood neck and a satin finish. The CS limited release "team built" was sold with Closet Classic treatment, i.e. slightly tarnished hardware and pre-scratched pickguard.

Here's mine:

During 2007, the Masterbuilders were also making Rosewoods, and they made both George Harrison replicas and also replicas of the later production models. If you want to see the differences, you should visit Dave's Guitars web site, he has photos of different Masterbuilt models.

I ended up buying a Masterguilt George Harrison replica, because I wanted the NOS treatment that you can only get with the Masterbuilt:

The guitar was a gift from Fender to George and one of only two made. The guitar was made of rosewood with a maple middle.
