I am trying to decide between the Gilmour New Old Stock or the Relic version. The guy I was talking to at the guitar store was telling me that besides the cosmetic stuff, the Relics also under go processes like degaussing the pick-ups, and sound immersion to "tune" the wood as if it had been played for a number of years.

This sounds like bad voodoo to me. Can any one corroborate or debunk these claims? Are there any other differences between NOS and Relic besides the cosmetics?

TIA

Further research does reveal some discussion about "vibration de-damping".

Is this a part of the "Relic" process? From the representations made on the specs, it looks like all "aging" is cosmetic, not structural...

I could not answer your question but I opted for the NOS model myself. I will relic it over time. It was just too much extra money for them to abuse it. 8)

Do you, or the person you talked to, know if the neck and the middle pickups are going to be hand wound by Abigail Ybarra ? If you talk to a Fender rep. please ask and reply. Thanks. I read on some web sites that said this was the case but nothing mentioned on this one.

I sure would appreciate it. I hope she does but I've already placed my order anyway. Thanks Gratz. You must be enrolled in the Fender university. :)

I read somewhere that the Neck/Middle Pickups were to be handwound by Abigail and the Bridge pickup by S.Duncan!

I read the same thing on other web sites but Fender does not mention that. Also, I may be blind , but I can't see where the mini toggle switch is located. Can you? :?

Pardon the spellcheck.....'Ybarra'. As an aside, that this woman has become a 'legend in her own time' has got to be one of the most incredible success stories of the 20th century. Talk about being in the right place, at the right time..............................

Doc

'The aging process will take hold as the payments become due.'

All kidding aside.....I hope you have a grand time with this axe! :P

Pickups degauss on their own over time, so they're matching it up to the real ones.

It affects the tone, some like it better, some don't.

Take that for whatever you think it's worth.

I wonder if they will take decades to degauss? I guess I will just have to wait and see if the tone is the warm sound I'm wanting. I may have to wait for it to happen naturally huh. Thanks for the input. 8)

Gratz, I was reading on another thread about the "Plek" machine used to set up guitars perfectly. Are you familiar with it? How about asking the Custom Shop if the use it on thier guitars. Thanks! :)
