Yo Chris!

I suppose this question is nearly 50 years overdue, ever since the summer of '69 when CBS-Fender sent my '58 Strat to ruin. On what basis does the design team establish the appearance of the 3-tone sunburst finish.

There have been several incarnations of that over the years from a soft, subtle blend of brown>red>yellow, to a horrific red band that runs around the guitar. My old guitar was of the transition generation from the the SB2 and it's original finish was the former. What CBS-Fender sent back to me after 'refinishing' in '69 was the latter and, as I was to learn some 25 years later, not even the original body. They had swapped it out instead of refinishing it. The clue was the presence of a shoulder in the control cavity.

I'll give you another example. I ordered a team-built guitar about 12+ years ago and specified the same finish as on the first John Mayer Signature Strat. It was definitely darker than other three tone burst Stratocasters of those years., and that's what I wanted. I did not get that precise look. I got a '64 red band. How can the production line turn out a run which, for all intents and purposes looks the same, and yet the Custom Shop not be able to finish a special order the same way.?

You have a whole new line of 'generation' Stratocasters going out this year. Upon what criteria did you decide what the sunburst was to look like for a particular guitar, and standardize the creation for a run of instruments?

Doc
