When Fender sent the VNs to Clapton for a try they managed to made the switch to AlNiCo II magnets.

Image

This move was required to make the pickups fully compatible with the Elite circuitry.

The marketing strategy from Fender to advert the VNs with different type of AlNiCo magnets caused a controversy as the original design employed AlNiCo Vs and not the weaker AlNiCO IIs....

I'm more inclined to believe that this move was required to kick Don Lace out of Fender's bed.

Don was already kicked 2 years before Clapton made the changes to his personal axes!

Interesting. I never got that impression from Eldred's response to my question as to why Clapton went to the VN's.

The Strat Plus ended, for all intents, and purposes in 1998. According to Xhefri, there were a few holdovers into '99. I had a '93 Blackie with Laces and a '93 Tele Plus V1 as well.

I recall you had made note of when the first VN Claptons hit the market but I've forgotten. I'm thinking 2001. Would they have withheld production for three years for the sake of the pickups?

Doc

That's a nice looking guitar, with the flame/neck wear/laces. What's the story?

It's the #V00009 prototype in its present form; featured in the front cover of the Eric Clapton & Friends DVD from 1986 with a 21-fret neck and 21dB MDX. Eric received the guitar with the updated features in April 1987, supposedly in the same time he custom-ordered the SLO-100 from Soldano Amplification.

I was told that Clapton had to wait about one year or two to obtain the amps.

So they took this guitar, painted it black and slapped a 22 fret neck on it!?!?!?! UFFF!! Thinking back, why we concern ourselves with some of the things he did with respect to his gear makes we wonder. I guest Pete Townsend made a point when asked, during an interview, why he smashed his guitars at the end of a concert. "It's my f'n guitar!"Image

For me....this....Image

and this....Image

.....are my connection to that period.

Mike Stevens slapped this 22-fretter on the pewter prototype #V00009. He also installed the birdseye 22-fretter on #V00008 during the first half of September 1988.

Eventually that neck was transferred into a new black body crafted by Jay W. Black in late July of 1990.

Fender Clapton signature Model stratocaster, black

Image This Signature model is made of a highly figured flame maple neck that Mike Stevens built in 1988 and a black body by JW Black in 1990. The Stevens neck was originally on a pewter signature model and when Eric moved on a new colour (black), the neck was taken of and put on a new black body. That was the main stage guitar from the 1990 RAH season until the 1993 Birmingham NEC concert.

So what happened to the Pewter guitar bodies? One was painted green I seem to recall.

There was a firm statement from Michael Stevens about the story behind #V00009 aka "The Heir to Blackie".
