There are folks who crave for Gold Laces in the 30th Anniversary EC Custom.

Kinda sorta "Heir To Blackie" guitar without the cigarette holder and burn marks.

Very cool!
I used Gold Laces in a 2-tone Partscaster that I built from a StewMac body in the late 90s.
LOVED the tone from those pickups. I ended up selling it to my boss a few years ago.

How do the current Noiseless compare to the Laces? I'm assuming the current "Hot" noiseless might be closer to the Red Laces?

I think Fender should put the Laces on this 30th Anniversary EC Custom as well as the burn marks and cigarette holder in the headstock. Only then this model would be period-correct since the late 1980s originals used them.

Dude, after all these years you well know that FMIC doesn't give a frack for your touchy feely nostalgia for the last of the 'smoker' guitars. This is a marketing strategy for a variation on a theme. As for the Laces, fuggeddabouddit. Them daze are gone forever. Fender wanted out of that marriage. That's why Fender built and then wooed Clapton over to the 'Noiseless' pups. Anyone who wants a knock-off of the 'smoker', or a pristine 'Blackie' or anyone of the other finishes, can have Todd build one for the right price.

Both of mine are +/- 30 years old already, as well as the Plus I bought from Xhefri. So what else would I need. As for Alain, Lord knows what he's got up his sleeve.

I guess we'll ultimately find out.

Doc

Not exactly.

I know it's a limited edition but I put these photos (and video) for reference purposes.

That's Townsend's guitar. I was referencing Clapton in my remarks. What's the story on the bottom picture?

Fender offered the "Who" Strat in Torino Red AFAIK. But I never imagined they also did this guitar in Aztec Gold with a pair of mini humbuckers.

That must be Custom Shop. Do you happen to know who it was built for?

It's probably a custom one-off commissioned by Pete himself.

He also owned a Blackie with dual P90s as far as I can tell.

Reminds me of the Strat Andy Fairweather Lowe plays. He's got a single at the bridge on one of his. Apparently favors that type of pickup design.

During the Who’s live shows in 2016-2017, Townshend was trying several different variations on the modified Torino Red EC Strat he’s been playing since the ‘90s, including a version with the mini-humbuckers. (Townshend also played his Gibson LP signature model for one show, then never played it live again; he was not enamored of it.) I believe I read that all of these versions were built by Townshend’s guitar tech, Alan Rogan.

Not all of Pete's Strats are EC signatures, he also plays several modified Pluses in his collection.

Unfortunately there isn't any documentation about Pete's gear yet on Xhefri's official website.

Andy disliked the Laces in his personal guitars and wanted something different, that's why he opted for some good ol' PAFs with metal covers.

I know him well. With the many hats he wears, what he manages to accomplish in a year's time boggles the mind and imagination. We'll just have to wait until he considers that at a priority....if at all.
