Hello guys, so like the title says, I just bought a brand new 2007 '64 Jazz Bass N.O.S. 2 days ago. So this N.O.S. is kind of a real N.O.S.

The bass was sitting in a local guitar shop for the past 10 years, unsold, virtualy unplayed. Knowing the owner of the shop, he made me an offer I just couldn't refuse. His explanation was that he ordered a bunch of Custom Shop guitars 10 years ago because Fender kind of ''forced'' them to do so and he had a hard time selling them. The shop is located in an area where mid-budget metal-type guitar are favored.

Anyway, plays great, sounds great. The problem is, today I decided to swap strings for flat wound. I unscrewed the bridge cover to discover unpleasent marks in the finish/wood. Looks like the cover was installed too soon on a not cured nitro finish. The contour of the cover is printed in the wood and needless to say it is a bummer on such a great looking instrument. Also, you can see that the dye has faded around the cover over time...

Of course, this is purely aesthetic but it kind of bothers me.

Has any of you seen that kind of marking before? Do you think this is something Fender Custom Shop would warranty? I'm affraid it will hurt the reseal value as a lot of people don't tend to leave the covers on.

Thanks

BTW, it looks worse in person than on pic.

Congrats on your new guitar.
I had it pointed out to me a while back in the forum that finishes are not covered under warranty.
You could always ask but I suspect the cost of shipping would be prohibitive.
If it was just in the amber maybe an easy repair but in your case it runs right thru the burst.
You may go thru all the hassle of getting it fixed up then dent it anyway.
Some people pay extra for relicing
You mentioned you got a great deal on it so either accept it as it is or talk to the vendor .... :D

Thank you.

I'll have to disagree. The fact that I bought it new in N.O.S. finish kind of defeat the relic point of view. I have reliced Strats but I wanted a nice clean Jazz bass.

I've emailed the CS Customer Service. Waiting for their reply.

Mainly, I wanted to know if I was alone in that boat or others with factory installed cover had the same issue.

If you take the metal control plate off, you'll see the same thing.

On a 10 year old nitro Strat, if you take the jack plate off you'll see the same thing.

If you were to find a true NOS 1964 -- walked into some obscure little music store that's had a '64 hanging on the wall for 53 years -- it would have those marks and the color difference would be even more pronounced.

Probably nothing you can do about the indentations other than to accept them and appreciate them as proof of its history.

But if you leave the bass out where it's exposed to light (with the cover off), the color change will even out quite a bit. It won't go away entirely, but it'll become much more subtle, less dramatic. Within a couple of years. Faster if you intentionally put it where it gets direct sunlight shining through a window.

I wouldn't think it would have a big impact on resale. It just shows that it spent a lot of time with the cover on.

Yep, I'm aware that red dye/paint pigments are the first for fade. Happened to me on a few Strats and 70's Les Paul. But you don't remove the control or jack plate ;) I decided to keep the bridge cover on and fit some foam mute in there.

Regarding the resale value, I hope potential buyers will understand that. I will be looking for pictures of vintage Jazz/P bass with the same marks to support the point of view.

Thanks
