[quote="nikininja"] It would be interesting to place this issue squarely in the lap of the company. This might, however, effect the price point of the product. My thinking is that we are currently probably paying 30% of retail plus tax in the US. What happens when one now deals directly with the company?

Below is some intersting info for those thinking of spec'ing out a Team Built Guitar

Basically you would start with a model that is closest to what you are looking for, and make mods from there

am i correct in assuming that you have to start with a custom shop team built model as the 'base' in the first place. For example, what if one wanted a '57 American Vintage RI but with a different neck - is it the AVRI +$650?

Or would you have to start with something like the CS '56 +$650 for a different neck?

I understand this question, and as far as I saw, it hadn't been answered. Would it be possible to say something along the lines of "I want basically the specs of an American Standard Strat, but with this neck and these pickups" and start with the price of the American Standard, or would the pricing be more along the lines of a Custom Shop Re-issue?

The procedure is usually this:

You present your specifications to an authorized Custom Shop dealer and indicate whether you want it Teambuilt (more than one builder) or Masterbuilt (single luthier). Depending upon your specifications they will tell you whether or not you have a choice. (special woods, working or machining dictate a Masterbuilt guitar). The dealer will get a quote from the Custom Shop and advise you. Quotes are generally at list so you have to ascertain whether or not you have been quoted retail or 'street'(price to you) on the job. You pay the entire cost up front before the order goes in. Then you bide your time doing the Rip Van Winkle, until delivery. If fortunate, your grandchildren will not have graduated from college by the time your guitar arrives. Oh, yes...be prepared for ticket shock. Masterbuilt guitars are $5K items and up. The Teambuilts a bit lower.

N.B. The post at the top of this thread is simply a guide. The aforementioned is the way most of us who have ordered a spec'd out instrument have proceeded. If you access the price list on the Forum, the Custom Shop's retail price list for their 'line' instruments is available.
Spec order guitars are higher.

If we can be of any further assistance on this please ask. The knowledge base out here is deep and extremely versatile, with a very willing and cooperative group of friends.

I'm not trying to start anything, and I love Fender, but what does this mean for us P bass guys? The CS no longer offers either the CS 55, or 59 P bass. So now to get a Custom Team Built P the starting price is that of a freakin' Pino PLUS 650 bucks?!? What a crock!

So since there's no CS production P bass in NOS we automatically have to start out with the bass at a Heavy Relic Custom Artist price? We now have to pay an extra 650 bucks to take off "upgrades"? That's what? Starting price of 4550? Might aswell order a Masterbuilt at that point. It doesn't even make sense, especially with the fact that there are TONS of J bass models.

So when one orders a Custom Teambuilt P do we start at a PINO and work our way down?...like minus for losing the double finish Heavy Relic, the custom pups, and the aged hardware? I seriously doubt it.

No offense, but the P bass seems to be getting NO LOVE around FMIC lately. It started with the cutting back to two finishes on The AVS models, now we're down to basically a 62 P in heavy relic Fiesta for The CS, and that's it. You can't order a Vintage B width neck P bass (early 50's and 70's spec) without it being a masterbuilt. Do you have to pay extra for a slab body? Or do you actually get a discount for that?

Sorry, but it's something that has irked me for awhile.
