I recently purchased a dealer select limited edition '59 Stratocaster NOS. I'm really enjoying the guitar, it is by far the best Strat I have owned with a really comfortable 7.25 - 9.5 compound radius and I'm loving the tuning stability and slightly higher output of the custom '60's houndwound pickups.

It was advertised with a limited edition centre pocket case, so I was expecting a custom shop case with custom shop embroidery in orange as this seems to be the colour for '59 stuff. I was disappointed when I opened the box to find a standard side pocket G&G case.

What's the deal with custom shop cases these days? I assumed if you pay for a custom shop guitar then the case would be custom shop too? I've had better quality cases with American Vintage guitars from fender so I'm wondering what's going on?

The custom shop have a variety of cases made by G&G.
Vintage period cases normally have the correct color exterior and interior but no logo.
Modern types often have the custom shop logo and sometimes limited edition logos.
If the specs for yours say centre pocket and you bought it new then that should be it.
Check with your supplier if you are concerned often cases get mixed up. :D

Contact your dealer and have them get you the right case. All custom shop guitars will have the FCS logo inside the case.

Best,
FCS

:D All?
Apologies and with respect but I disagree as per my post or are you just referencing to the specific guitar in question...
Generally speaking there are a ton of time machine custom shop strat cases that do not have any CS logo.
They do have G&G though. :D

This is an excellent topic and observation. Fender's "American Vintage" series from 2012 on really went a step further with the cases. They are not 100% period correct but they are closer with more narrow profiles for the '56 and '59 models and a thicker profile for the '54 50th Anniversary model. They also enclose period correct case candy. To be more period correct, the tweed would have been lacquered.

The custom shop Heavy Relic '54 50th Anniversary Strat came with the thicker profile case but not the period correct case candy (though it came with a very nice tool set). I have a couple of '56 Custom Shop Strats, but they have standard G&G cases.

Many Custom Shop guitars do not have a specifice Custom Shop case, I know I have several of these.

That's my experience as well. I have two Time Machine FCS guitars purchased from Guitar Center in the early 2000's - both had G&G Fender cases but nothing about FCS indicated. A more recent FCS purchase did have a special case - it was the 60's Anniversary Heavy Relic '54 Strat.

Ah!! My favorite pitch-a-bitch subject. As Alain has noted, and I have observed through personal experience, it appears that the choice of case derives from the point of view of who ever is responsible for that chore, and guitar it is being provided for. My Gilmour came in a far more elegant case than the Team Built guitar I had done 3 years before. The one observation I have always made in these pages regarding guitar cases, and that from having been an owner of two models, is that Fender has long way to go in that department to beat Paul Reed Smith in the quality of the cases they provide for their high end instruments. I owned '94 CE24 bolt-on, and an '08 Hiland, the cases for both exceeded the quality of the two Fenders I just mentioned. Just say'in.

YMMV!

Doc
