Do any of you own a CS strat with what you know to be handwound Custom '50's (NOT Fat '50's!!!) pickups, and have opened up the pickguard and had a look at them? If so, could you describe them? I am trying to figure out what I bought over the holidays without cheating by emailing FMC for help.

Asking for help from Fender's consumer relations department can hardly be categorized as "cheating".

Shoot them an e-mail.

They will have black fibre bobbins.
They might be signed Abby or Josefina and have the date but there are other variants e.g I have a set from a 1955 hle relic reissue and they have the initials BP and HW and the date. I have seen some similar with the initials LD. Hope that helps :D

Yes, mine are signed Josefina and have black bobbins and orange Formvar wire. I apologize for seeking open input and not wanting to lead any witnesses. The salesperson from whom I purchased the instrument told me that it was equipped with Fat '50's. Specifically, and the reason I started this thread, after playing on my own amps for a day, these did not sound like Fat '50's-- they are lower output and more vintage in tone-- and do not hum cancel in positions 2 and 4, and I am enjoying them more and more. I am hoping that they are HW Custom '50's. I popped the pickguard and found these:

There is no yellow (RWRP) hot lead on the middle (as for Fat '50's), the neck has no dot on the B-pole (I am used to seeing blue on the Fat '50's), and the bridge PU has the blue dot on the B-pole as opposed to the red one that is usually there for Fat '50's and others-- suggesting that the lower-output of the set was installed at the bridge-- indeed, the whole set is lower output than the Fat '50's I have heard. I do not have a multimeter so cannot confirm this. I did email Fender Customer Support with an inquiry.

... and Customer Relations came through. Floor Traveler sheet specs Handwound Custom '50's, as I suspected. I could not be happier.

arjay, yeah, that was easy... I suppose that I've always enjoyed scouring internet images and old ad postings to work up the actual specs of my CS guitars. Now I'm tempted to request a build sheet for each of my keepers.

If you have several (and I suspect that you do), it'll help keep each instrument's details sorted for easy reference.
