Hey brothers! Since I'm selling off all of my other high-dollar axes in hopes of getting the "ultimate" strat for my tastes, does anyone know if Fender makes "user designed" guitars? Or do they only make their own "custom shop" models that we have to live with. I've had Jackson make me 3 customs all designed by me over the past 15 years and the first one that I came up with is the only axe other than my new MIM limited strat that I'm going to keep. Obviously the pricing can be outrageous, but if they can make what I'm after, then it'll be worth selling 3 to get THE 1 that I really want. Does anyone know? BTW I REALLY hate going through dealers rather than straight to the custom shop because that's how miscommunication screwed-up my last 2 custom shop Jacksons. I mean seriously, if you're going to shell out that kind of cheese, don't you think that you should have the right to talk DIRECTLY to the people that are making your axe? I think so...

Thanks for the information brother! Yeah waiting kind of blows, but when it comes to a "perfect" instrument it's worth it to me. Heck I had to wait almost 2 years for my last Jackson Custom Shop 7-string Soloist and the neck cut was all wrong because the dealer didn't listen to me at all so I sold it on e-bay for what I paid for it which was $3,500.00. Which brings up my main concern: Do I have to go through a dealer with Fender or can I actually deal directly with the custom shop to help avoid my last 2 disasters with Jackson's custom shop? If I could deal with them directly, then I'd do the order and wait my time in confidence that the axe WILL be EXACTLY what I wanted. Please tell me it's so...

Yep, the standard way is to contact a Fender Dealer, he will check out with you the specs, then he contact Fender for the specs (possible for not) and fore costs.
Dealer will contact you then again. If say yes, dealer will order for you.

If you do that in some time please post a pic of your new baby.

cheers :D

Man that's a real bummer. I'm VERY apprehensive about having to go through a dealer ever again after the Jackson incidents so if I can't go direct through Fender's custom shop, then it won't be worth it to me. Waiting all that time for your axe and then getting something that ends up being a little different than what you ACTUALLY ordered is really disheartening. I won't do it again period (that is going through a dealer on a custom order). Oh well, I guess that I'll just get another standard strat and start from scratch on building my own "custom" axe. It'll cost a whole lot less as well.

Shreddin,

I read an article from a guy who ordered a Custom Tele. He said in that article that after the project was accepted and approved the builder called him to verify the specs. During the build process the build tech kept him informed and send him pictures of the guitar at several places in the process. During the build when new questions came up or a simpler option was available the Fender build tech contacted him to let him know and get his approval. He did have to go through an approved dealer to get the ball rolling and the dealer was involved in the communications but the customer was in communication with the guy actually building the guitar. Needles to say the customer was VERY satisfied with the whole process.

Thanks man that's what I was waiting for. If that really is the case about how Fender handles customs, then they go waaaaaay beyond Jackson & ESP. I've already got the design ready so I guess I'll go into World of Music in Erie and get everything ready with Mike. I have to go there anyway because I have to pick up my new Schecter and see what I think of it. That company is really putting a ton of effort into the metal scene all around our country and are VERY serious about endorsing really techy/heavy players like myself even if you're just a paid studio dude and don't have a band together at the present time (they'll usually piece one together in that case). My whole reason for even getting a strat was to be different in the speed metal end of the genre. People crap when they see that style of playing done on a strat because that's definetly not the norm for that axe. Along the way though the Strat has become my favorite axe that I've ever owned so now I want to build my own METAL MONSTER STRAT that's not only beautiful, but also has some of the best tone known to man! I'm already locked into the Schecter thing though so I at least have to give it a shot...

There are two ways to go with the Custom Shop....Team built and Master built. Masterbuilt is more costly and is usually required where the design will require special tooling, paint, etc.

You should expect $5K and up to be the opening bid, particularly if you are thinking of a 7-string ( of which there is a history way back in the early days of the Artist series guitars).

Doc
