I have been dreaming of this guitar since it appeared in the Fender Frontline 20 years ago. I've finally decided to make the leap and order one from Tundra music which is located here in Canada. Having been the happy owner of other Fender custom shop guitars I can't wait to see this beauty and expect the quality will be top shelf. I just hope the quilt top and flame back/neck are as good as advertised and as nice as the others I've seen online. Anyone else have one of these amazing guitars? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Yes I do
One of the best the FCS has released as "on stock" also the most expensive of that category.
It's a perfect high end Telecaster. A dream to play and the finish including the carving of the dog on the headstock is tip top.

Wow ! That is an amazing guitar. The wood quality is amazing. I've been told that it is the top of the line as far as the "stock" custom shop models go. I can't wait to get mine. It's a dream come true to finally have one ordered.

I would be curious to how many have been made to date. I'm assuming given the cost they are lower than normal numbers from year to year.

I have a little update for anyone who is interested in the Tuff Dog Tele. A Fender agent was kind enough to provide me with some production information directly from Fender. The agent who contacted me was only able to access numbers back to 2004 but advised me that there have been approximately 180 Merle Haggard Telecasters produced since 2004 to today. Only 180! What an amazing and exclusive guitar. For me it has always appeared to be the crown jewel of the custom shop line.

I currently own a few other custom shop Fenders and I have to say I don't think I have ever been as excited for a guitar as I have been for this one. I can't wait to see this beauty with all the quilt and flame maple. The dealer has assured me Fender will pick out some great cuts of wood for the guitar.Once again Fender has displayed why they are the best guitar company going today. They care about their customers and understand their passion for these fine instrument. I'm happy to say that this one will be going to Nova Scotia Canada.

I really like the bottom/treble end of that "sharkfin" pickguard, and wish they all were like that. To me, covering up the horn has always seemed like a bad design, hiding more of the guitar than needed. I understand that in the past, there were routing holes on the lower bout that had to be covered up, but not all the way up.

For the top, I'm not so sure. One advantage of Telecasters over Stratocasters has been that the pickguard extends on the bass/top side, allowing finger pickers to brace the thumb or use a thumb pick on the bass string without scratching the finish. That's severely reduced on this one, and form seems to have won over function.

But beautiful? Oh yes.

Amazing. For me it's the best looking guitar Fender has ever made and yes I know that's a bold statement. The slight tint to the neck matches the two tone sunburst perfectly . The tint also seems to make the flame neck pop as well.

I played on once.
This old preacher in Edmonchuck had one and I sold him an amplifier one evening.
He must have passed on by now.
Actually I prolly put a half hour on that guitar.
That was a lot of years ago and I am thankful I got to play it as long as I did because I have not had that opportunity again since then.
I'm thinking maybe it was 1998?
It was definitely the most beautiful Tele I had ever touched or prolly ever will.
The 4 way switch was a problem for me though.
I simply could not wrap my head around the fact that when I rolled the switch to the far end it wasn't the neck pup by itself.
To my way of thinking the two middle positions need to be next to each other.
It's the only thing that makes any logical sense in my mind.
If I recall, I believe the switch was:
Bridge - both parallel - neck - both series.
I assume it was done that way at Mr. Haggard's request.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I know this is a really old thread but I was looking online to see if there were any photos of a standard Tele with a flame top. I have a MIM Strat with a flame top that is just beautiful and would like a Tele to compliment it.

Seems like Fender only does it on high end The high end Tele or HH Tele. Anyone seen a MIM with a flame top?

As an update for anyone who is interested I'm still waiting for this amazing guitar. I ordered it in April and was told that it should be ready by February. Looking at examples I see online this guitar has to be one of the best looking Fenders out there. I can't wait to see that quilt!

I'll post photos when I get it.
